Re: This Year\'s Record

I don't see the academic losses making us any worse than last year. Sure we lost Tony but he didn't make us better last year, he led us to hug wins over who? UCONN and Vandy and a loss to clemson. The only other significant loss was TOny Hargrove and where we lose him maybe Greg Gathers makes up for whatever Hargrove gave us last year. Hopefully the QB play will be better, whoever may start, The O-Line is strong and the backs played decent last year, Receivers have great potential with Curry, Smith, Bridges,Thomas, etc. and Chan will run the offense wihich I see as an improvent over BOB. Linebackers are very strong with Smith and Fox D line will Feature Gathers, Henderson, Parker, Malone, 2 strong corners, safety play may be suspect. Special teams takes a big hit but overall I think we have a great shot and improving on last year, maybe I am just a crazy optimist but thats what I think about the upcoming season.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">YES SIR, i agree with your post. we had lost tony early in the year last year anyways .. but it still sucks that he isn't on the team now.

hargrove is a big loss. bigger loss is sampson. i have heard rumors on these boards that bridges is a casualty.

we have a good recruiting class coming in who are excited about early playing time.

kenny scott and reshaun grant should be starters if they are as good as advertised. leshaun newberry and mansfield wrotto will also be key if they are as good as advertised.

we are already hearing about other recruits playing in post season high school games thanks to GTAce (who unfortunately still has no confidence in our recruiting but still)

if we can find a QB we'll be better than last year. there wont be a schizophrenic offense .. it will have an identity. the defense is a question mark because we will get back gathers to improve it but we lose hargrove and our secondary. the special teams is up in the air.

who knows? i'm an optimist too.

Re: This Year\'s Record

It's all about the schedule, the O line and the QB. Nothing else matters (well a good D does, but I think we'll be fine there). Guys who aren't here don't matter, coaches who aren't here don't matter, players who went elsewhere don't matter. We have the talent IMO to do fine against the schedule if we can control the line of scrimmage and if our QB performs.

Re: This Year\'s Record

NC: control the line of scrimmage- I believe that applies to both sides of the ball and that would be a novel idea for our defense since about 1990?

I think that Gailey would like to play that style given his pro background but whether we have the right personnel and depth is a big question.

With all of the Big O's gruff talk, we never did control the defensive line and thus always gave up the big 3rd and long play. Normally you would counter this by controlling the O-line and shortening the game.

Besides all of the other bad stuff last year our O-line play (no, I'm not a Mac-backer) was the biggest disappointment to me and did not control as they used to in the Fridge years. Maybe with one offensive philosophy, we can at least get that portion of the game back and play the Lou Holtz strategy of keeping it close to the 4th quarter. Who knows?

Re: This Year\'s Record

The loses of Hargrove, Pullen are gigantic. Malone is just huge and losses of McNair, Bridges, and Sampson just very very large.

The academic blows were painful. We will need old lady luck to smile on us to make up for the losses.

Bilbo turning into the next Vick could make up for them. Here's hoping.

Re: This Year\'s Record

2ndgenj... I agree about the D line but to tell you the truth we've always done it with smoke and mirrors and LBs and I'm assuming we'll do the same. Our O Line is more important to me because we'll be breaking in a new QB and RBs and we need to give those guys time to figure out what's going on.

No, make that 22. Helps when you have 4 super star guys on D. Gathers ready is one! Who thinks Smith is? Fox to me is best D player on the team ready for his senior year along with Smith!

That makes 3 not counting others... Henderson, Parker, Houston, and Cox.....

The 4th to me is Pullen!!

Let's line up and play some football! Go Jackets!!

Re: This Year\'s Record

sorry to repost this below...but it belongs here. For someone to say Hollings and Hargrove were the only significant losses...they are obviously unaware of the loss of 2 of our top 3 DT's, as well as others.

Academics the biggest hurt...schedule strength #2 or #3 is not a good combo with all of the freshman that will be playing. The other two are non-issues IMO.

QB- Huge question mark. I say go with the one that has the most potential, most leadership ability, and stands the chance of being the best QB in 2004.

FB- Question mark. We hear that Matthews is the real deal at FB...but do we need him more on the DL now? Our plethora of other FB's have never stepped up...Jackson, Johnson(also a TE), Dixon.

TB- Big-time question marks. Ace does not have the break away speed and has injury problems...tends to run tall. Needs to keep his pads lower. Hatch has to get over his injuries mentally, which has not happened. Daniels is a solid, but not spectacular TB...great guy to have on board though. Can Grant be an every down TB as a true freshman? What if the injury bug hits any one of these four backs?

TE- Here is a position where the first two strings look strong with Foschi and Cooper.

OL- First string great. Second string empty with exception of Tidwell-Neal. We need the youngs kids to step up quickly. We can afford zero injuries here.

DL- What once was our strength is now a weakness after academic problems. Henderson will be special. Can Gathers recover his quickness and stamina?...there is no one to give him a breather. Backups are Chirod and Darius Williams...unproven. Anoai and Oliver will be forced into early action. Auburn could be a long day for these kids.

LB- Our best first string on the team with Fox, Smith, and Wilkinson (hoping he can do it this year). Good backups with Ather Brown and Anyansi...after that we better develop the true freshman (Hall, Wheeler, Moore) because we lose Fox, Smith, and Brown...they are seniors.

DB- Loads of talent here...also some inexperience. Our most talented group ever maybe with Cox, Houston, Davis, Scott, Harris, Landry,
Reis, and Butler. We need to get Roberson on the field and develop some experience there with Butler a Jr. and Burton a senior.

ST- Huge question marks. Burnett beat out scholarship kicker David Jordan in the spring despite the fact that Burnett is 0-8 in his career at FG tries. He can kick the extra point though (100%). Punter is a battle of walk-on's between Andy Thomson (1st string) and Hal Higgins.

This Year\'s Record

In your opinion what will be the greatest detriment to Tech having a winning season this year? Also (if you wish) how would you rate the other three?

A. Inferior recruiting past two years?
B. This year's schedule?
C. Academic wash-outs?
D. Coaching Staff?

Re: This Year\'s Record

Of the four mentioned, I would have to say the key players lost by grades.

However, to me the most important aspect of this coming season is the development of the quarterbacks. If we have good quarterback play, I believe we will be competitive in all of our games.

Agree with ahso, though Aurbun in place of UConn doesn't help.
