My thoughts thru 4 games, since you asked:
1. The loss to NIU was and is inexcusable and CGC’s sugar coating afterwards was concerning and annoying;
2. We learned nothing from the KSU game; finally stopped the TO.
3. The CU and UNC games paint a completely different picture. Stingy, aggressive defense with opportunistic, if still flawed, offense.
4. Very proud of the way the coaches and team have worked since NIU loss; Yep
5. Still don’t feel we know what we have at QB. The UNC game was kind of an albatross….Yates was ineffective and Sims ran the zone read brilliantly. Passing game still extremely vanilla with a lot to be desired. Not sure what the heck the UNC defense was thinking. They consistently collapsed the backside and Sims made them pay. Good for him but I have no idea how he or CDP will respond when teams start stacking the box, squeeze the backside end and force us to throw the ball; 2 Backs, UNC couldn't handle the change in speed with Sims entry. They were snoozing on Yates and keying on the backs. Pitt won't be.
6. Our OL is very much a work in progress. We’re bigger but not necessarily better; They had a better day than the UNC O- line
7. McGowan is a stud….and so is Eley. Great pickups.
8. We underutilize Gibbs by continually pounding him in the inside zone. He’s an explosive athlete in the mold of Calvin and JT. We have to do a better job of getting him the ball in space. We have not been the least bit creative with him. 2 backs and Sims opens the door
9. Quez and C. Thomas are playing at a high level; So is Tariq.
10. We have athletes in the secondary but not great football players. They need to significantly improve in coverage. 8 sacks had some help
11. I’m cautiously optimistic for the rest of the season. #me too
That is all….for now.
