Thoughts...

Well, put yourself in the shoes of a top notch recruit from S. Georgia...who are you and your family more likely to snuggle up to...a southern guy that seems to share your values too or a pacific nw guy known as "slick rick"?

You guys are too funny. I thought that part of O'Leary's success was his ability to recruit instate guys to come play at Tech - you know, like Key Fox and Daryl Smith. I'm pretty sure that the big silver haired guy from Long Island didn't speak the same language, but he knew what to say to get them here.

I'm educated enough to not judge some one based on where they are from. But let's face it, it easier to sell a southerner to southerners whether its right or wrong is another topic. Does that answer?

Neither Les Miles or Urban Meyer are "southerners"- they seem to have no problem recruiting the south. Kids are more interested in playing big games on TV.

This thread wasn't an attempt to debate recruiting, it was about building the fan base, it takes a special person to recruit here no matter where you're from

Thomaston - I think it's a valid question. Chan was a southern guy but was very poor at communicating to the fans through the media although he was better in more intimate settings. I think if we get someone who is more media savvy (which is a high priority) no matter what part of the country he hails from, it will help give a positive impression to fans who may be looking for an affiliation.

The recruiting question is also a valid one - our new coach will either need established connections in-state or maintain some of the current staff with connections. We don't have time for an entire new staff to build the necessary relationships to maintain the momentum we have recruiting Georgia.

What we keep hearing is that Rad wants to make a big splash with this hire and that Neuhiesel would make for a big national splash, but 2 things:

1. I think Neuhiesel makes a big splash primarily for the wrong reasons therefore the pubicity would at best be mixed.

2. I don't think Neuhiesel makes a big splash where it really counts, in Georgia and the Southeast.

If we want to make a big splash where it really matters, we should hire Hatcher. Hatcher wins everywhere he goes and is beloved by all the people that come into contact with him. He is Georgia-boy that the entire state can get behind. I can envision a lot of grassroots support for him in the rural parts of the state where we don't get a lot of support currently.

Just imagine the AJC article that would be written about a Neuhiesel hiring versus a Hatcher hiring. It's night and day.

Thomaston, great, insightful post. Keep up the good work. Btw, my Mom grew up in Thomaston and is a R.E. Lee girl.

All the best and..

GO JACKETS!!!

Frank Howard, the old Clempsen coach--a sort of Jerry Clower persona for those too young or too transplanted to know--was definitely "Southern" to the bone. quote]

If they don't know Frank Howard, they sure as hell don't know Jerry Clower

Yukonwreck = Dennis Miller. Just laugh, you sound smarter if others think you actually get the reference.
