Today's Assessment...

Our O-line is going to have to show more toughness in the between-the-tackles rushing in the red-zone. This resulted in more FG's than TD's.

I believe most of Choices yards were outside the tackles.

i thought the receivers played well, which is a good sign. I think TB will work out his bond (pun intended) with the WR's and he will manage the game. That is all he needs to do as this defense is lights out. Best DL I have seen at the flats since I can remember, and that includes 1990.

I disagree on the OL. When the D has 10 in the box, you aren't going to run it inside. The problem in RZ was with Taylor imo. You have to give the D a reason to loosen up and he was either off target or making the wrong read in close. Hopefully he'll calm down and get better, and when he does the OL will be able to find yards inside.

I hope Jahi Word Daniels comes back in a hurry. Pat Clark looked really bad, was toast on 3 passes, one for a touchdown but the ball was overthrown. I didn't realize he was that slow. Any word on Jahi?

My only concerns coming into the year were 1) secondary (corners, not safeties) and 2) kickoff coverage

kickoff coverage looked superb. Corners still worry me....a lot. I would like to see more of a playmaker returning punts and not a recycled version of Kelly Rhino in Evans or Smith. What about Earls? or J.Evans? Just a thought.

I think offense will be fine. Oline was throwin haymakers yesterday, really physical. Very impressive.

... Very proud at the end of the first half that we didn't go into prevent defense, well we did the first play but after that we blitz and it was all over. ...

I was watching late in the game (about 2 minutes to go). We had some clean jersey's in the game; but Tenuta was still sending 6. :laugher:

Does Tenuta even have a prevent defense?

As a coach there would be plenty to critique to work on improving from Saturday.

But, as a fan, that was a perfect beginning to a season. We won in South Bend. We beat ND worse than they've ever been beaten in an opener. They have been beaten 30 points or more at South Bend only six times in their history.

We did it without trick plays, dazzling runs, acrobatic catches, or lucky bounces. We were just dominant over the Irish for sixty minutes. Will this type of performance be repeated every week? Probably not. But, congratulations to players and coaches for playing a great, great game at Notre Dame. Watching it the first and second time has been great. I'll save the tape and label it, "Better than Rudy".

I hate to say it, but the problem wasn't just Taylor. The play calling was extremely predictable when we got inside the 20. We ran the ball on 1st and 2nd down and then passed on 3rd. I thought Bond could have mixed it up more on 1st down. When Taylor got a chance, it was 3rd and 7 and ND was sending the house.

I'm not talking about just in the RZ. Taylor wasn't on target much of the day and I think Bond was trying to ease him into the game. But if you look at those trips into the RZ, you will see open receivers that he either missed or didnt throw to (Cox). I think he'll be alright and that it was first game nerves.

I will say that I saw a HUGE difference in our run blocking vs. out pass blocking. I hope that was just due to not being that effective with completing passes.

Here's hoping that TB can find that open receiver as he starts to breathe freely again.

But I think part of the problem is that everytime in the red zone we were starting at the 9.5 yard line. That's the toughest area to get into the end zone. I swear teams should just stop at the 15.
