Paul Johnson with Giff Smith as DC would’ve been badass.Who was a better choice than CPJ in December 2007?

I don’t want that stink on us. He could be Nick Saban’s twin and I wouldn’t want him, just because of the baggage.Art Briles would retire here.
That he was made a scapegoat then paid $15 MM to avoid a public lawsuit when it was determined that he didn't know anything?I don’t want that stink on us. He could be Nick Saban’s twin and I wouldn’t want him, just because of the baggage.
I don't trust a guy that can't post a winning record in three years at the world's richest CFB program.Charlie Strong
Seems to be the exception rather than the rule with him. In 2008, we certainly had a more talented roster than Louisville and he would've had similar early success to CPJ without the recruiting deficiencies. We would've been a stepping stone, though.I don't trust a guy that can't post a winning record in three years at the world's richest CFB program.
I didn’t say it was right or fair. He is toxic from a PR perspective and I don’t think we need that sort of controversy right now (or ever for that matter). I agree that he would be a good hire from an Xs and Os standpoint, but the optics are just gross.
What, are we afraid of losing ticket sales to the social justice mob?
I'm pretty sure they aren't buying tickets anyway, and I don't think the media could treat us any worse, so I'm failing to see the downside.
Art is literally the first HC replacement idea I've heard that isn't terrible and stupid.
I agree. Let's also turn down Saban.Briles is 62 and has recently been named head coach of some American Football club in Italy, don’t really want someone that age regardless of the baggage.
Baggage and age aside, I'll bet he'd swim across the Atlantic right now if there was an FBS job waiting at the other end. Dude obviously wants to work.Briles is 62 and has recently been named head coach of some American Football club in Italy, don’t really want someone that age regardless of the baggage.

Nice sarcasm, ignoring the fact that Saban is a zero possibility do we really want to bring in a coach about the same age as CPJ? May not be a stepping stone risk but more likely a retirement risk. Heck we have been talking about the possibility of CPJ retiring sooner rather than later.
What's the chance we pick up a 40-year-old coach who stick around for 20 years?
We should be ecstatic to grab a guy who could stick around 5 years and build a winning program. Briles is hungry to rebuild his reputation. He'll stick around at least 5 years until that's done. Meanwhile, does anyone else mentioned have a track record of transforming a middling P5 school to a championship contending program?
If Briles builds that, you grab his most promising assistant or - gasp - a top tier coach because GT would be a destination program with 4* and 5* recruits, national TV exposure, talking head coverage, a number before the team name, and a revived fan base donating $$$.

You make some good points but in reality even if we wanted Briles I can’t see getting past the Baylor stench whether deserved or not.
And while I would love to see it from any coach we can get I do not really believe we can get many if any 4 or 5 stars. We still have our difficult academic reputation and limited curriculum to appeal to enough of those really high level athletes, nothing new there buts it’s never yet been solved. But getting better recruits is key and our current staff hasn’t made great inroads there.
I do think Charlie Strong could do well here. He would be a good fit for Tech.
