Top QB Luallen chooses Tech !!

I guess PJ feels the need to sign a blue-chipper for every UGAg player that's finger printed. We only have so many scholarships, Coach.

If our problem starts to be we don't have enough scholarships, then I'll take that any day of the week.

Think we'll sign a 2nd QB in the 09 class? Luallen will likely be 4th string or so his first year.

I hear we may sign 3 QB's.

Holy crap.

We better come up with some 2 QB formations then. We'll have 6 QBs on the roster for Nesbitt's senior year.

I guess we could use some at WR if they're fast enough.

I have very fond memories of an ESPN article about Tech in 2000 calling us "Quarterback U." Think we're seeing a return to that?

I have a feeling not all of them will be playing at QB.

As I understand it....

The philosophy of the new staff is to sign 2-3 QB's every year. Our QB will be hit a lot so there will be playing time for 3-deep at that position, and anyone who doesn't work out at QB can be moved to WR, DB, etc.

Dooley did this for years at the cesspool. He'd scoop up all the best QB's in the state and convert them to DBs, WRs and RBs. Some of those years we couldn't find a QB that would start for most teams on our schedule. It's a good strategy.

Most dual threat QB's play other positions in high school too. i.e. Josh Nesbitt and Morgan Burnett.

So lets say we get 3 per year. That's 12 roster slots for QBs, 15 if we always redshirt. Even converting half our QBs to other positions we're looking at 6 or 7 roster slots for QBs. Is that too much?

I don't know, I'm asking.

That is probably too much, which is why more than half of them would probably be more inclined to play a position other than under center. If a recruit really badly wants to play Quarterback, he won't be looking at us if we've got 14 or even 6 other guys that he's competing with.

Well, thats why you and I are on this board talking about it and Coach Johnson gets paid the big bucks !!! I'll trust his judgement !!!!!!

Remember this same topic being discussed early last year only to have most of the QB's bolt or asked to leave? I'd much rather be back in the position of having too many QB's than where we're at now.

Beej, I don't know if he will do this every year, but CPJ last night said he is looking to get 1-2 more QB's to sign for the upcoming class --this in respnse to question about Luallen.

Correct, and if any of you have followed a triple option team before, then you know that your 4th string QB in a bad injury season can quickly become your lead guy. You can never have too many QB's, RB's and FB's in the 3-O!

PS: I have also heard PJ say one time that "I like getting alot of QB's on my team even if they are playing at another position because they get the most touches per game in highschool"

I'd speculate he's hitting the ground heavy for QBs now, so we get up to as many as he'd like to have for depth reasons, probably around 5. Then we'll scale back a bit and take about 1.5 per year. That's just speculation though.

Agreed 110%

bj, look at it this way. Most of these QB's aren't gonna make it to the league as QB's. There just aren't many running QB's playing NFL ball, at least not with great success. Such a gifted athlete, though, may can make it at another position if he is willing to learn - eg: Bilbo. I think the idea is to bring them in, promise them a shot to play QB at Tech, but also promise them that if they can't, we will teach them a position where they may can make it to the NFL in an offense that will showcase their talents. To me that's as good an offer as most of those guys are gonna get - and it is much better than being lied to by CMR and staff as they recruit blue-chip after blue-chip passer.

Much of the time a HS QB is the QB solely because he's the best athlete on the team. If I'm recalling correctly wasn't Landry also a QB coming out of HS several years back?

Landry.....Logan....Bilbo......Latrez Harrison.....and those are just guys GT recruited or signed

The 'old school' philosophy of setting your first 22 players (back when size disparities weren't all that great)...

Best athlete - QB

Next best 11 - starting D

next 10 - rest of O
