Two Missed Calls

I waited awhile for all the whining and calls for a new coach to die down to post this. I can't in good conscience blame the entire loss on bad calls (and more importantly, non-calls.)

BUT, two calls that stick out in my memory are the holding calling that would have taken away the UVA touchdown and the interference call that would have kept a drive alive (especially since the pass was likely a TD without the interference.) Also, the holding call would have turned a TD into a QB sack. (There were lots of non-calls for holding, but that one was worthy of replay on SportsCenter.)

If I go back in my way-back machine and call those two incidents correctly, does it change the game? I think so.

My point is NOT to whine about "we shudda won but for the refs." My point is that I can probably pick a couple of plays in 3 or 4 of our wins that mean a loss if the calls don't go our way.

If you are positive then you take this info and say, "We were darned close to 7-1 despite all the problems." Of course, the negative will take the same and say, "See, we never really were as good as the record."

Actually, we're closer to 8-0 if you take dickheaded zebra calls out of the equation.

If you're talking about that pass near the end, which I'm guessing you are because it sure as hell looked like interference to me and everyone in the stands, we got that first down subsequently and then threw an interception to end the game. There was also no way it was going to be a TD. I don't really remember another one that would have been interference, unless you're talking about the overthrown ball that our guy tripped/laid out for and didn't really come close to making the catch. Certainly that first one was the only one that was bad enough to really catch the ire of the stadium.

We got outgained by 140 yards. We did not deserve to win that game.

It's worth pointing out the PI call because it was such a horrible call. When it's obvious, it should be mentioned no matter how much it affected the game. And who knows, maybe Josh wouldn't have felt so rushed after a penalty and clock stoppage.

A no-call that was definitely non-consequential but also obvious was the hold on the fumble recovery. The UVA OL grabbed one our DTs right over the shoulder pad and there was no call.

Could RM verify that UVA did hold throughout the game like us amateurs are saying?

I hate bad calls as much as anyone else, but Kyle is right. If we put ourselves in a position to let the refs decide the outcome, then we have to live with the consequences. Hopefully the team will will remember next time we get a 14-3 first quarter lead that we need to go for the throat. Missed tackles and fumbles cost us a game we should have won. Can't blame the refs.

I forgot about the UVA first down when Peerman stepped out and dove forward. Both commentators expected that one to be overturned with replay as they kept showing him step out before the dive forward.

Anyway, again the point is not "we shudda won" but rather we were darned close to winning in spite of everything. Does that change the attitude of many if we play the exact same game and make the same mistakes but get calls our way and win? I think so.

We will always get jobbed by the officials. The only way we can possibly do what we need to do to win, is overcome the referee screw job.

Our D did not adjust but the two fumbles are what cost us the ball game.

The ref's and their seeing eye dogs did a very poor job this weekend. I wonder what Jack Childress, head ref for the ACC had to say about this game. My bet is he and his crew are at our game Sat. That cheap taunting by UVA 31 would have been 15 yards since the idoit was not on the field playing but on the sidelines when our guy was tackled. It was nice to see PJ walk down the refs several time and point.

Heck I'll pay the bail money for a ref to hit the ground during a play, they are part of the field of play, correct?

Did the refs drive back to Viginny or fly with the Team?

You realize that the VT crew and the UVA crew are one in the same.

They had Clarke County tags on their van, too....per the HIVE.

If our referees are, indeed, from Athens, that is just so damn ridiculous.

I will admit that there seems to be some evidence growing of an ACC conspiracy to jack us around with officiating, but despite Beej's growing mound of zebra ****, I still cannot fathom that Swofford could mastermind this. He's a turd. I believe it more if Miami wasn't a festering pile of ****.

Bad calls by refs are part of the game. Remember that holding call against Clemson in their last drive that brought back a 1st down pass by Harper?

The two missed calls sucked but it didn't suck as much as our defense and the mistakes made on offense.

Good point about the Clemson call but that one did not overturn a TD. At least one of the missed holding calls was on a Virginia TD play, pretty obvious holding there IIRC.
