UAB v Miami

It's the worst of all. They showed they have the players to give anybody a hard time if they feel like it and that they're still Miami and will inevitably blow games they have no business losing.
This. They looked like a .500 team to me. Some good athletes but lack discipline, consistency, and “that guy” that can blow the game open. Then again, it’s game 1 so maybe my expectation is too high.

ACC Network.

Miami didn’t set the world on fire on either side of the ball, but King seems like the kind of QB that could give us fits when we inevitably lose containment.

I don’t know. He had several big runs that would have been a loss against better players. He also appeared to be prone to pulling the ball down and running (typical freshman) when pressured. Against a better D, he is going to face a lot of 2nd or 3rd and long.

I was also unimpressed with their secondary. That UAB QB was chucking balloons with no running game. There were a lot of picks to be had, but they ended up hitting the ground.

He made some TERRIBLE throws too. He had like 145 passing yards. If Harris is out for an an extended period of time or possibly the season, that will hurt them tremendously.

Isn’t he a grad transfer, not a freshman?

The secondary definitely should have made UAB pay for some of those floaters, but Miami looked OK against the run for most of the game. Next week (Louisville?) should tell us a little more, but Miami is such a head case it’s hard to know what team will show up.

I know nothing about their QB other than he is new. If he is a grad transfer, good. Then he won’t improve on trying to run all the time.

Miami run D looked solid. But they did last year too until they played us. We’ll see once they play a P5 team.

I am expecting everyone to play sloppy in game one.

Not even a grad transfer.... King quit on Houston last season after about the 4th game when it became apparent they weren't as good as in past years.... so he enters the portal & transfers to the gaping void/sucking chest wound that is DaU.

Louisville week 2? Don't draw any conclusions from a week 1 throwaway game when week 2 is a big game is a good rule of thumb. Vanilla by design and looking ahead and still walk away? I hope they suck but not convinced this is proof.

I think you go in to that type of game mildly vanilla, not to tip your hand if you don't have to, but I fully believe Miami would've liked to have had backups in there for the whole 4th quarter knowing their starters have a big game coming up next week. Especially now since they got their star RB hurt with 10 minutes to go in the game. 14-7 halftime score is way closer than just being "vanilla." Besides, one of UM's first half TD's was a 66 yd run on a busted 4th and 1 play. You turn it over there on downs on your own 34 and you're likely looking at 14-7 the other way going into half.

Yep. Holgorsen started sitting valuable players after 4 games so they wouldn't burn their redshirts when things weren't going smoothly. His reward for trusting his players and the future was of course the ööööty season and then King transferring.

Holgorsen is no prince of a guy, either. What he was doing was essentially going into the tank in 2019 for the 2020 season. I'll bet the UH alumni & big bucks donors were none too happy. This is the same program (actually the university president) that fired Major Applewhite for not meeting expectations by going 8-4 or something with a program that had gone nowhere since the SWC dissolved.

Favorite line amongst players in the GT Carson Era re: coaches:
Q: How can you tell when a college FB coach is lying?
A: His lips are moving.

Yeah I didn't intend to paint him in a noble light. They definitely tanked the season after some of those early losses. I guess the closest thing I was trying to say was there was an implied "honor amongst thieves" that they were all complicit in and then King bailed.
