UGA fans that root for Tech when they're not playing UGA

Weird. There are some UGA fans here at GSU that are rooting for Tech when the two don't play. It's got to do with the PJ thing.

I think that when you have won 6 or 7 in a row it is easy to be magnanimous and say that. Those same people probably were not thinking that when Donnan lost 3 years in a row to us.

Thinking about this in reverse... On years past when we've actually beat UGAg during Clean Ole Fashioned Hate, I've turned around and hoped that the nadlickers would end up winning their bowl game. But that's the only circumstance I'd pull for them, and you could hardly call it "rooting".

I know a couple of people who considers themselves fans of both. One pulls for Georgia when the two play and the other pulls for Tech.

Hate all you want. But would you rather beat a 1-10 UGAg team, or a 10-1 UGAg team?

1-10. A defeat at the hands of Tech would just put a cherry on wonderfully horrible season.

There's no way I'm going to root for UGA just so we can beat them when they have a good record.

I've found that in the majority of cases I've seen where someone says "I'm an UGAg fan but I like Tech, too - when they're not playing Georgia." it means they meet some or all of the following criteria:

1) They are extremely ignorant about both schools and they like Georgia mainly because it's just what people do and so they don't have an actual passion for the sport.

2) They are desperately trying to avoid a discussion or argument with you or anybody else about the rivalry because of said ignorance.

3) They are simply sitting on the fence and leaning toward the greener field.

The absolute worst is when they say "I like Georgia in football and Tech in basketball." There are few phrases that get under my skin more. Nobody walks around wearing a United States Air Force pin right next to an Al Qaeda Cave Defense pin.

It's demeaning and it pisses me the hell off. They say it the same way some of us say that we root for Georgia Southern. They don't view us as being in their league.

It all comes down to winning. The last time they had 7iar on us, I kept hearing the same thing. After we beat them 3 times, they wanted nothing more than to beat us.

That's a good point. When I was growing up, my dad always told me that he wanted Auburn to come into the Iron Bowl undefeated, just so it would be a harder fall for them when they lost. Of course, this is back when Alabama actually won every once in awhile...

I understand why people look at it that way and I used to look at it the same way but my mindset has changed. The reason being that in the long run, it's about me wanting us to be better than UGAg as often as possible and for as long as possible. The fewer games they win, the worse they are and the better recruiting gets for us, meaning we get better.

I'm not ever in favor of them doing anything well. If I had my way Georgia would never win another game against anyone again - it wouldn't diminish how much I hate them and it would just get sweeter with time.

A 10-1 UGAg team is going to recruit a hell of a lot better than a 1-10 team. A 1-10 team is going to get their coach fired more quickly, which will lead to even more turmoil in the mutt nation. Sign me up for wanting to beat the 0-10 team - why even give them the one victory???

edit - Just saw your post The Jacket, and seems we are on the same page...

As much as I hate UGA, I found myself rooting for the hometown boys in the NCAA Baseball World Series. :ugh:

One point that everyone seems to be ignoring is that UGA fans don't take the rivalry as seriously as Tech fans do. We have one rival, UGA. UGA has several! Florida, Tennessee and us. I know a few UGA fans who care much more about beating Tennessee than they do about beating Tech.

Further, we have lost 7 straight to UGA! It's pathetic! Barely a rivalry anymore! When we start beating Georgia consistently :fingersx: I have a feeling that we'll see a change in the UGA fans' attitudes.

I think we need every fan we can get....

I HATE the fact that UGA seems to have our number in just about everything. Sometimes it seems that all they have to do is throw a UGA jersey on the field and we fold up like a rusty lawn chair. But, you know what? That's not their fault - it's our fault. Maybe "fault" isn't even the right word - maybe a different perspective, maybe different priorities....whatever it is, we are the primary party to it. All they are doing is being the best they can be.

Do you not think it possible that someone might just merely be a loyal Georgia resident who wants every Georgia related team to be successful? And If I didn't have a dog in that fight, I'd probably pull for the team that was ranked the highest because I would want my state to get as much attention as possible. If UGA was rnked higher, I'd pull for them and if GT was ranked higher , I'd pull for them - as a loyal Georgian. So over the last 7 years, who is the loyal Georgian going to root for?

While I agree that it probably helps us in recruiting ,etc if the Dawgs are bad, on a personal level, I don't really care much one way or the other if UGA is any good or not. They just aren't that important to me. I could care less - as long as we beat them. THAT'S what is important to me. JMHO.

Rough analogy:

It sounds a little like going over to your sister's house and sleeping with her while her husband is away on business.
