UGA getting a med school?

Because it doesn't make any sense to have state med school in the part of the state with the densest population, most hospitals, and therefore most job opportunities for new graduates. Duh!

Really, Tech shouldnt "have" a med school, but theres no reason one shouldnt be in Atlanta. Its going in Athens because all the MCG kids bitch and moan about how uncool Augusta is compared to the cesspool.

They're gonna need some local health care after Paul Johnson kicks the crap out of them.

there is one. its called Emory and it is one heck of a school. MCG is not in Atlanta either, btw, because real estate is expensive. have hospitals and jobs is irrelevant while you are in school, only matters AFTER

Funny how you missed where I said "STATE" med school in the previous paragraph. And hopsitals don't matter at all, med students never do clinicals...

Edit: The above came out a bit harsher than intened, not trying to get into a pissing contest, but not everyone can get into/afford emory, so expanding the states med school is a good thing. Just no reason it can't be in one of the Atlanta Suburbs, or better yet near Tech and give the city some more "college town" areas that most the great cities of the world have.

You guys are missing out on a real opportunity for comic relief here.

yeah, i missed 'state' and dont worry about the tone, i am pretty thick-skinned and know what you meant

i still think that the cost of real estate is the reason. typically, med schools have a 'teaching hospital' not a Grady or a Piedmont nearby, they need major facilities, labs, etc. why would you build in ATL? and if you say 'suburbs' then you are not saying Atlanta.. might as well be Athens, it is basically a suburb of Atlanta now.

furthermore, rural areas typically have less access to healthcare. one way to alleviate that problem is by putting a med school there. That way the rural areas get more exposure to medical care, and who knows, maybe some doctors will stick around.

The same can be said for third world cess pools of disease ridden filth, who's reading comprehension level has yet to exceed Stone Age status. Which probably better explains the Board of Regents decision in the link.

there is another reason also. recently the Navy decided to close its compound on Prince Ave in Athens. it happens to be right near a hospital. the hospital group has been in discussions with the University to partner on expanding the hospital and making it accessible to a potential med school. this has been in the works for about 2 years, since they were expecting the naval base to be eliminated.
