UGA getting a med school?

UGA Getting Med School
...Students scramble to figure out what "School" means

Actually, if we're finished with the one liners, yes they are opening a med school jointly with MCG in Athens at some old hospital not contiguous to the existing campus.

I've heard more than one person say it would be the end of MCG in Augusta eventually.

Then you've heard more than one person who doesn't know what they're talking about.

They're opening a new med school in Athens because we currently have a major shortage of physicians in Georgia, particularly in rural areas. We have only one PUBLIC med school in GA (private schools have no specific obligation to their state's citizens), and opening a school in Athens provides the easiest opportunity to do this because of the facilities already in place and the location (hospitals in Atlanta are affiliated with Emory or Morehouse to a lesser extent, and graduates tend to stay in Atlanta or move out of state).

This will have no bearing on MCG (Augusta), as students will prefer the Augusta branch (i.e. it will be more competitive) as it's already established and well-known...

While I realize Mercer's med school is private, wasnt it set up to provide more family practicioners for the rural areas in GA? This happened while I was being held prisoner in Myrtle Beach for a number of years but I thought I remembered hearing about it since I've moved back.

Okay, was not going to comment on this issue, as it has nothing to do with football, and probably even less to do with Georgia. But since Mercer has been mentioned, I will throw my 2cents in. I am a grad of Mercer's Med School, and am now on faculty there.

Yes, gold, Mercer was founded to send primary care practictioners to rural Georgia--something that it has done fairly well (usually gets awards for the number of FP graduating, etc. -- I am one of the rogue non-compliant students--went into cardiology, but am still in Georgia); and we are about to start a new program in Savannah, if all the budgeting goes through correctly--we do get money from the state, but in general that money goes to good use as a high percentage of students do stay in the state. Our proposal was 5 mill from the state to start the 4 year program in Savannah--that is less than the amount Perdue wanted to consider this program in Athens, so a fairly good deal for the state. (I am not really in favor of it, as I feel it splits our program in 2 cities, which is not a strength--imagine if Tech wanted to do EE in Atlanta, but wanted to put CS in Columbus or so--hard to collaborate in separate cities)

Now in terms of the program in Athens, this is Perdue's idea--and the people in Augusta are not really happy about it. Augusta people see the same problem as I mentioned above, and now when the state gives money to MCG--it will not all go to the Augusta branch. So people in Augusta are a bit upset about this. So I disagree with your statement, rambleON, because it will affect the money being given to Augusta, and research will be affected by this as well.

All this being said, more importantly than the school, is what are we doing for residencies (training programs after schools). This is the most important issue regarding retention of physicians. All physicians are required to do a certain number of years after med school for different practices (FP, IM, Peds 3 years, Surgery 5 years, CT surgery 7 years, Cardiology 6 years) -- and where doctors do residencies determines where they usually practice more than the school does. However, residencies are getting cut due to financial cost savings---this is going to play a bigger role than just med schools.

I apologize for continuing this thread in the football talk. If the mods want to move it, I will happily continue this conversation elsewhere, or people can pm me if they wish, but I would rather talk about football--especially GT football--on this subgroup.

Isn't a UGA student simply a primate wearing a red cap anyways?

In a lot of cases yes --and as seen here (in this archived photo originally posted by SMoney)-- they sometimes are prone to stealing Ronald McDonald's wig and wearing it over their red cap.

That is what I had heard from a physician also. Its a political gift to UGAy. And since UGAy is the 900# gorilla it will eventually overshadow MCG in some regards, perhaps not in quality or reputation. Much the same way as if UGAy gets more engineering degrees would have an impact on Tech, which I can tell you they are desparate to do from speaking personally with some of the engineering faculty there.

There are 4 pages dedicated to UGAy getting a Med School. Glad there is nothing to talk about GT and CPJ. Some of you get a life and quit worrying about others when we have ourselves to worry about!

Do they have engineering classes beyond Agricultural Engineering?

Do they have engineering classes beyond Agricultural Engineering?

from their website:

Overview The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Georgia is a new kind of engineering school organized to capture the convergence of scientific and engineering disciplines. Unlike conventional engineering schools where faculty members are appointed to an engineering department, UGA engineering faculty in the Faculty of Engineering are housed in academic units throughout campus. In addition, engineering faculty at other universities and engineers in the private sector are encouraged to participate in the Faculty of Engineering.

This innovative interdisciplinary approach to engineering increases opportunity for learning, research and outreach at the confluence of disciplines, giving rise to new but pervasive fields like pharmaceutical engineering, metabolic engineering, marine engineering, ecological engineering, information engineering and biological engineering.

Academic programs emerging in this environment adopt an educational approach that gives engineering students broader learning experiences and prepares them for careers devoted to the integration of discoveries from multiple disciplines. The programs graduate engineers with liberal arts backgrounds. The use-inspired research paradigm that emerges out of the collaboration between science and engineering leads to the development of products and services that are relevant to the needs of society. The engineering outreach programs enhance economic development and quality of life for Georgians, and prepare them to be global leaders in science, technology, education and sustainable development.

The Faculty of Engineering is a new and daring experiment. The unconventional approach to organizing a major discipline is unique and may be the first of its kind at a research university in the United States. It employs principles of entrepreneurship, boundarylessness, networking and life-long learning to create a learning organization that is responsive to unpredictability and adoptive of opportunity.

The development of high quality, relevant programs in engineering at UGA will not only serve the University and its students, but the state of Georgia and a changing world.

Technically the school confering the degrees is Biological and Agricultural Engineering, but if you check out some of the students resumes they as listing "BS Electrical/Mechanical Engineering" etc.

I guess here is the present official state of affairs:
