CFN, as I think we have noted here, is preseasoning UNC at #9:

9. North Carolina 2008 Record: 8-5 2008 Final CFN Season Rank: 26
Of the five losses last year, there was a sloppy 41-10 blasting from NC State while the other four losses were by a grand total of nine points. Those four close defeats were all by three points or fewer, and now the team is far more mature and should be even better as long as a receiver can be found. Hakeem Nicks left early and Brandon Tate hurt his knee and is off to try to make it in the NFL, so Greg Little and Kenton Thornton have to try to get the passing game going. The great recruiting classes of the last few years should start paying off with better depth, while six starters return on offense and nine starters are back on defense including strongside star, Bruce Carter.

This sounds like hope and moonshine to me, but maybe I'm missing something. Why would they be projected higher than GT?

Well, for starters, they killed us last year. Second, they have a big name as a school, even if it comes via basketball. Third, they have a coach with a bigger name than Paul Johnson(currently). Fourth, they lost their bowl game by one point and we lost ours by 30.

As far as I'm concerned, the higher ranked the other teams we have to play, the better. It's not like it makes them any more skilled, it just looks better when we win.

They're one of the trendy darkhorse picks for next season. You can pick them and claim you were a genius if they succeed and if they lose, you can easily say they're under performing. That said, I think we'd fall into that category as well, although I know we'll succeed. I've been baptized by the Church of Johnson... wait that doesn't sound work safe...

Why wouldn't they? They spanked us pretty good. Us or them in the top 10 seems pretty far fetched to me anyway.

I agree it is silly to say either of us in the top 10, and saying any ACC team should start ahead of VPI (like this ranking does) is equally stupid. Also, ranking between two teams shouldn't be based on who beat each other. I mean with UNC, they did indeed have only one bad loss but they also had only one good victory. Also ranking looks at who is coming back. UNC lost their two best offensive and defensive players and their chief backup QB.

Honestly it seems UNC gets attention like this only cause of basketball and Butch Davis.

When we beat them, we'll be ranked higher than them. These preseason polls are a joke. I think we all know what happened to the preseason #1 last year.

So what makes Va Tech a top 10 team??? I say just eliminate all preseason polls b/c they are garbage

preseason polls are true garbage
its how a 3-2 auburn team was somehow in the top 25 last year

It's all because of Butch Davis IMHO. ESPN and the rest think he's a god because he built the Miami MNC team. Lots of Miami people think he wasn't more than a great recruiter though. The fact that they beat us, should have no direct bearing on your prediction for their team next year. UVA should be ahead of us if that's the case.

You could say that both we and UNC are at about the same level right now, in terms of national respect. UNC played in an exciting bowl game, however. They also run an offense that football analysts can regurgitate. This alone makes the media like them more, since most of the media is too stupid to grasp abything that our offense is running.

They deserve to be ranked higher. They beat our brakes off (score wise, which is what counts). However, I think we take it to them something fierce this year. PJ will have his day of revenge and Old Butch will be saying :wtf: just happened.

You think so? I get the impression that the media really wants us to do well. They respect CPJ's candor and dry sense of humor, they know we run a far cleaner program than most, and enjoy watching something different.

I do agree with BD being a higher profile guy right now, and UNC is kind of a Cinderella story in football under him.

I do think that we will get lumped into the "gimmick" offensive category by most of the mainstream media. When I say media, I'm referring mostly to the talking heads on ESPN/CBS/ABC who try to sell us their version of college football. Most of them are patently retarded. Lump that together with the story about UNC rising from mediocrity and the name recognition of the coach, and I think there's a larger media draw for them to succeed. UNC succeeding is easy to talk about. Paul Johnson's offense still confuses me most of the time. I can only imagine what Lou Holtz is thinking when he watches it.
