...with a front 7 that are likely all NFL bound. Of course, they found some big-play passing in their last game against East Carolina.

Back to the defense.

In their three games this year they have given up in rushing yards 30, 72, and 55 yards per game. In passing, they have given up 123, 124, and 192 yards.

That is total yardage of 153, 196, and 247 per game.

Those stats...along with a front 7 that we know is good...tell us that our offense will simply have to execute flawlessly Saturday or it could be a long day for them.

We will see who shows up.

Still too early in the season to be quoting stats about anything really.

*Insert "offense/blocking/OL/Dwyer/Nesbitt/Allen must improve if we are going to beat them" here*

These numbers don't reflect the fact that they played:

Citadel
UConn
East Carolina

So I'm not sure how much you can read into them just yet.

Giving up 30 rushing yards to the Citadel is probably 30 yards too many.

We'll see what happens Saturday. Our offense *should* be much more powerful than either East Carolina or UConn.

Many of you not giving the credit to the stats that Paul Johnson did in interviews yesterday...that is fine...but you cannot discount their front 7 who are all NFL prospects.

I agree that their schedule has been mediocre thus far...which should help us against them. We cannot discount the level of talent on the defensive side of the ball though. We have multiple 300+ DT's we have to move Saturday.

Back to the stats. Lets look at Baylor...the Baylor that beat Wake Forest (2-1). Last weekend UConn (2-1) ran for 235 yards and passed for 147 against them...a total of 382 yards.

I'm am scared of UNC's defense. This is one of many reasons why a win this Saturday redeems the sub-par performances in the first 3 games.

Anyone who watched the game in 2008 should know all about UNC's defense, especially those two LBs, Sturdivant and Carter, who lived in our backfield.

But I feel we are as good as a questionable officiating call to beat UConn by 2 and a +14 win over a non-BCS team. Will be a close, hard-fought game, but we owe UNC one after playing like crap last year against them.

I think CPJ will get the blocking to improve this week. Funny how every week we hear something to the effect that, "this is the toughest defensive line that Tech will face all year." When do we get to the easiest defensive lines?

That would be Mon-Thursday in a typical week. :ugh:

Starting October 24th, through November 14th, we get Virginia, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest (not that Wake won't be pretty decent, they just won't have Clemson, UM, UNC type talent) and Duke. If the offense struggles significantly during that stretch, then we know there are some problems beyond talent differential.

We still got a good bit of yards last year against UNC, although credit goes to UNC's defense for creating fumbles. Big DE's shouldn't be enough to shut down this offense. If it is, then that points to tackle and A-back blocking.

They don't have DE's that are gigantic. They're 260 lbs. Marvin Austin is a great player at DT and they have another 330 pounder at DT.

Oh sorry, I meant DT's, not DE's. Generally big, strong and fast DT's, DE's and LB's will spell disaster for an offense.
