First off, I don't have much to say because all the intangibles were there. Great coaching during the off week and the game. Great playcalling. Great effort. Great heart. Really everyone looked really good and played better. I felt good about the team watching the game live, but watching it on the DVR replay solidified my feelings even more.

On offense:
Wow, the Abacks blocked. PJ needs to keep it simple more often. When the Abacks block its a night and day game for us. I noticed when we got on the perimeter, as long as the abacks blocked it was ok if the tackles got blown up because we would gain positive yardage. Sellers and Barrack played ok. They are much better blockers in space, ie. going to take out a linebacker or safety than they are blocking a dlineman. When they do this, the play is almost always going to the outside. I noticed a few plays where they just got tossed around, but when they go after a linebacker, I feel sorry for the lb because every time they cut their legs out.

Runningbacks looked awesome. Josh showed why I think he has great potential. I just wish he could put it together for a string of games. He showed more guts yesterday than any player out there. UNC was constantly going after his legs sometimes after the tackle occurred. Dwyer had the game we've been waiting for. AA threw some nice blocks, and Roddy was his regular solid dependable self. Preston Lyons is a strong up the middle option. He brings it.

I've been cursing playcalling for the last two weeks because PJ seemed like he was out of his element. Not yesterday. He did exactly what we do best. I love the addition of the draw play to our offense. even the line was pass blocking like a pro offense on that call. Defense had no idea what happened.

Overall the only negative I found on the offense was the play of #71. Cord Howard is a senior and a second team All ACC player. He whiffed a handful of blocks badly yesterday and then at the end lost his composure and had a personal foul penalty assessed on him. I've been hard on the big man because in my opinion he's the most talented olineman we have in my opinion, so there's really no excuse. His pulling is suspect as anytime he pulls across the line to take out the DE, I'm like "Oh ****!". He gets there late or not at all or like a couple of occassions fell on his face and clogged the avenue for Nesbitt. We need Cord to be better and he can be better. It seems like he's regressed. When Cord is on, he's strong and moves people. But I think he plays soft and until I see him play 4 quarters of total effort, then I'll keep saying the same. The talent is there, that much is obvious.

On defense:
Our four leading tacklers were defensive backs, but that said, I thought Jefferson was in on almost every play. He showed a lot. Rashad Reid seemed to be playing 3 positions at once. Morgan Burnett with the exceptioon of one play, played like an all american.

I loved the new look DLine. Logan Walls has found a home. The guy can play. He was all over the place. Ebiguniwe showed some promise. We still need to manufacture more pressure and I think we helped that by going to a 4-3 defense. Cross played some solid minutes and Barnes and Peters rotated in a lot. Walls is definitely the starter now though.

Our secondary was lights out yesterday. How we go from Miami to UNC in performance is incomprehendable to me. As I've said all year, Reid needs to be a regular starter on defense. Reid next to Morgan Burnett has the best instincts of any defensiveback I've seen at GT.

I will say this. I don't think our new look defense was all that tested. For one, we held the ball on offense for 42 minutes and two, UNC's offense is lethargic. So this is a nice effort from the defense, but really its not a great indicator to me how much they improved yesterday.

Going back to offense, no one has the blue print to our offense. UNC's defense was pretty stout. I thought they tackled poorly, but PJ tends to make other teams do that.

The officiating yesterday as we all know was horrendous. Just how horrendous? It was the WORST I have seen since the GT/VT game last year. It was probably worse than that, but since we convincingly won, it doesn't stick out as much. Had this been a close game and we lost, Swofford would be getting some much deserved heat from DRad. Just some of the penalties I saw.

On the non-holding call on Morgan in the 1st series, Ebiguniwe was also being held. In fact I saw him being held 2 more times throughout the game with non-calls. We got horse collared twice and one facemask that I never saw called. Not to mention the end of the 1st half. If the refs didn't have an agenda, then they are completely incompetent. I don't know what can be done about this but as fans with you tube and blog abilities, we need to point so much fun at the incompetency of ACC refs that Swofford takes notice.

good analysis. i have noticed that there seem to be much fewer holding calls as long as the hands are not too far outside, which i dont like, but is kinda in line with how the rule has been going at the top level too.

the head tackles and the facemask stuff is inexcusable though

Nice Read. The part highlighted: We go from UM to UNC secondary performances by pressuring the QB. I think you get it, but so many on here dont. Secondary performance is 90%of the time a direct reflection of DL play and pressure. We had Yates on the run for 99% of his day. The only time he hurt us downfield is when he had time to throw (whether that was great blocking, our DL being tired..doubtful...and not pressuring the QB)
When you attack the QB the offense is in for a long day and so is he. He's going to look dreadful and he did...like 40% completion rate.
I disagree. I think this was an indicator of how good our Defensive Potential is and will be. As long as we can pressure the opposing QB, we've got the athletes and position players to make the Offense pay. We did that, and I think the UM game woke us up (even the coordinator moving to the 4-3 set) and we're may have started the turn around process

You didn't mention Blair though!!!...you didn't need to

Anyone on here who criticizes yesterdays outcome as it relates to the game play....is dumb as ****

We looked great and dominated a VERY GOOD AND WELL COACHED defense.

Go Jackets.....Move the chains....and keep pounding it down their ****in' Throats

I like how there was almost no difference when the center, Bedford(?) , got injured and Voss came in.

I'm not really good enough on x's and o's, especially on defense, to know this for sure, but we apparently also missed a lot of assignments on defense. It's likely Wommack wanted to get pretty exotic with his wolf scheme, trying to create different blitz looks or fool Harris into throwing interceptions or something like that.

I also think he realized he tried to do too much and last week he went back to basics, 4-3 Cover 2. Cover your man like you always have and pressure the damn QB.

Seems like we went back to basics on both sides of the ball, with a great outcome.

I think that is by far the most we have actually run a basic triple option in a game yet...and the results speak for themselves.

IMO the OL is still the weakest link on this team...but the ABacks picking up some of their blocks(finally) took some of the pressure off of the OL.

Oh, and Josh's completion percentage is a huge sigh of relief for me. Let's stick with the short dumps/slants from now on. Go deep once or twice a game...not every pass play.

With all of the good things that occurred against UNC, there was a mention about the secondary coverage being directly related to QB pressure. I agree with that assessment 100%, but our DB still seem to lose track of receivers by letting them get behind them in coverage. There is no excuse for a safety to let a receiver get behind him...period. If the QB is in the backfield with the ball in his hands, the safety (or last line defender) has to give ground to prevent a possible offensive threat from exploiting that.

New board that updates stats = F-

Didn't work all game except for a few minutes in the first half. Kept losing power. Big scoreboard went out at one point also.

Yes, it seems they are still working out some kinks with the new video and sound.

Howard will never be able to pull. He is a true tackle it seems.

I noticed on one of the plays that he was supposed to pull that he was very slow to the point and missed his block because he had a noticable limp even when moving full speed. He tried, but just could not move fast enough. To me, it looks like he is about 85%.

Agree on many/most of your thoughts BOR. I thought the A-backs blocked a lot better yesterday. AA had a few key blocks to spring big runs... he did miss some key ones too. The defensive personal packages were a major improvement. You used the exact same word to describe Cord as I did... Soft. When he pulls he just gets in the way. However, I know that he has the ability. I have seen him drive defenders 3-4 yards off the ball...he needs to step up and do it every time. Only thing that I will add to the O-Line is about Sellers. I did not think that he played well at all. He gets manhandled when blocking a lineman and he pats LB on the shoulder pads as they cross his face. He is a liability IMO. Do we really not have anyone better?

I could be wrong, but I believe He did away with the Wolf Scheme he's used thus far this season to go with the 4-3

I didn't see to many missed assignments yesterday....

I think we'll still use a 5th defensive back against pass happy teams (like Georgia), not a hybrid wolf thing but just a player with more speed.

Yeah, that's what I said. We used the Wolf against Miami, and then went back to basics and the 4-3 against UNC, at least that's how I see it. I was also talking about missed assignments against Miami.

Nice report BOR.

How did Stephen Hill block? I haven't watched the replay yet but he looked good on the few plays I focused on him.

+1. Stop focusing on playing the overplayed lame SNL skits and make sure the damn thing works.

You're right, I completely forgot to mention special teams and Blair. He sucked. Yall happy?

Deliriously! You really are a rich man's Yukonwreck!
Ya'll should have pity on me---just got in from the Bucs-Giants game.
