Hopefully this isn't a repost but I hate UNC so I felt like sharing. Hearings begin August 16th and the NCAA sounds pissed. Hopefully this ends with banners coming down and a death spiral for all of the athletics. From the article "UNC's course of action has been to deny that the issues regarding the AFAM department fall under the jurisdiction of the NCAA. The NCAA's reply begins with a lecture on exactly why this case DOES fall under the NCAA's jurisdiction in their minds. The reply states "The issues at the heart of this case are clearly the NCAA's business." In fact, on six different occasions in that same paragraph the phrase "it is the NCAA's business" is used. The primary allegation is that UNC provided "benefits to student-athletes that are materially different from the general student body." This refers to the "unpublicized courses" facilitated by Deborah Crowder that allegedly were made readily available to athletes but not to the rest of the student body (note: the NCAA acknowledges that 52.6% of the students in the classes were non-athletes, UNC says it was closer to 75%).

Crowder described these as "special arrangement" classes and the NCAA claims that these classes were established for the purpose of keeping athletes eligible who would otherwise be ineligible.

But the much more concerning allegation is the nuclear bomb: Lack of Institutional Control. This is the worst charge that the NCAA can issue and in the past it has resulted in programs receiving the death penalty. The enforcement staff claims that to allow these beneficial classes to take place might constitute Lack of Institutional Control.

The question is whether the Committee will go that far as well. That's the worst-case scenario, but with so many in the media and in other schools calling for Carolina's head, you can never be sure how far the NCAA will take it.

I wonder how the non-athletes found out about the "unpublicized" classes and registered for them. Were they friends of the athletes or other minority students who were in academic trouble? Did the university recruit non-athletes for the classes to create an image of legitimacy? It would be interesting to interview some of those students to find out how they ended up in the classes, but I doubt the NCAA has any subpoena power to get access to them. I really don't expect the NCAA to take any action at this point, unless there is an incriminating paper trail, and it's doubtful that UNC would have been that careless. This is probably a "show trial" for the NCAA to save face.

There are hundreds of e-mails discussing grade changes and class changes and papers being written and unauthorized people changing grades and forged professor signatures and even identical papers being turned in and them asking the dumb jocks to resubmit.

1) UGA 2014 forward progress. There is simply no explanation for that not be either a TD or forward progress stopped. It went for like 5 seconds from the 2 yard line straight ahead. Either its dead or he's in. Refs running in with his hand up without blowing the damn whistle. 14 point fuckup.

2) Clemson 2011 Offsides. Cost us 7 and was hilariously egregious. He literally hits our guy before the snap. Honestly can't think of a worse offsides that went uncalled. 7 point fuckup.

3) UNC 2009 1st down clock roll. How the hell do you just forget to stop the clock on a 1st down - and how in the holy hell do you not correct the mistake after the coach points out the problem? That's one of the few instances I can think of from a GT game where I legit thought the ref had to have an external reason to make a certain call. Okay you ööööed up, stop the play and rewind the clock to where it should have been. 3 point fuckup.

4) VT 2008 Personal Fouls. We tie the game with about a minute to go and they give VT 30 yards on two late hits. One was borderline (don't call it in that situation) and the other was straight phantom. 3 point fuckup (that cost us the game).

5) UNC 2015 Targeting. Gotsis just sacked him. It would have been more dangerous to lower his helmet. What the hell was he supposed to do? Might have cost us that game.

Worst call I can remember in our favor was 2009 Clemson. I think it was their second to last possession (game tied) that they hit a ~50 yard pass to Ford that was called back for a phantom holding penalty. Would have put them in position to milk the clock and kick the FG - instead we stopped them and converted our own long pass to BayBay and won the game.

Another recent one was Stewart's catch against UK right before halftime. He was lying on the ground when he caught it and they gave us the catch and OOB to stop the clock with a few seconds left to get our FG unit on the field. But that's impossible - either he was down in bounds or he was OOB before the catch. Handed us 3 points.

2014 ugag - the second tackle that ended up tearing Smelter's knee up. That was garbage - he had clearly been down and was getting up after the play. I think the refs even blew the whistle before the second tackle?

The question is whether the Committee will go that far as well. That's the worst-case scenario, but with so many in the media and in other schools calling for Carolina's head, you can never be sure how far the NCAA will take it.

To get the death penalty, they'll need to be a repeat offender. This time they'll end up with scholarship reductions, a post season ban (which hurts the entire ACC), and some revoked wins. If they continue and are caught again in the next decade, then they'll face the death penalty.

But who knows? The ACC is a vengeful god when you don't kiss the ring.

That was absolutely egregious. GT should have directly sued the referees involved for gross negligence and the NCAA should have fired them - the call was that bad.

I don't remember any bad calls from that game - only the non-calls from Duke twisting knees and ankles play after play.
