UVA thoughts..

To rephrase what I said, yes any coach is a gamble but Key seems a greater gamble to me compered to other options that have more of a track record being a successful head coach. Just cause multiple options are risky doesn't mean they are equally risky.
Obviously, we cannot predict the future, but other coaches would probably just look at Tech as a stepping stone to other, bigger programs. Key MIGHT do the same, but I just have a feeling, that he, if he is any good, would be here for the long run. We need a coach like that. I am not saying right now that Key is the right choice (there's a lot of football left to be played this year), but to me, he has an awful lot of positive qualities that I think negate most, if not all, of the risks.

I think what we need more is a coach that is very unlikely to fail (and preferably has the potential to do very well too). Which do you think is the greater concern and leaves us in worse spot, the next coach being successful enough to get hired away (leaving something to build off of) or the next coach having 4 mores years this level of failure or worse? That the consequences of the latter seem far more dangerous to me than the consequences of the former.

Worrying about whether the next coach would leave for another job if successful seems like putting the cart way before the horse and is something Tech fans seem to fret over too an unhealthy degree. If even schools like Oklahoma and Notre Dame can get their coaches poached, hoping we can find someone who is successful and That loyal seems like a long shot.

I can only disagree on the last part, I just see very few positive qualities so far beyond not being the negative influence Collins was. It's a question of interpretation of the results we have seen and I doubt we'll come to agreement on them, so can leave that debate for another time.

GT's OL is as bad as any FBS team in the country. With that being said our OC needs to try to give them somewhat of an advantage by not play calling by rote. We don't have to run the majority of the time on 1st down. Most DC's have figured that our play calling borders on limiting our QB making mistakes thus running the ball on first and second down. Defenses stack the box to limit our rushing game. This invariably leads to 3rd and long (plus 6 yds) and this is based on us not getting some silly penalty. Naturally on third and longs it forces us to pass and D's to pin their ears back and we know how our OL is going to react under the pressure. Long needs to start being creative, what the hell does he have to lose?

Are you saying this offense is not built for 3rd and long???

If we hire a new coach, we're going to have to start over again and we'll probably have a couple more 3 win seasons with a new staff. I would expect several players would go into the portal. I'm really torn on this. The offense, Thursday night, did no favors for Key's quest to become the HC. I'm worried the replacement for Sims may cause the offense to flounder even more. It's going to be a tough sale to keep Key if the wheels fall off.

that made me laugh, touché
It's tough keeping a sense of humor when this crowd marched in here running their cocksuckers & have systematically destroyed our program. Just when we thought we'd stop being laughed at, we hit the start button again. March out Gibson in Tallahassee & I'm done with all of them except for Tillman and maybe Thacker with his improvements this year despite losing an abundance of high caliber players to toher programs.

Might be a bit premature to assume the UVA game is the aberration. The risky thing with Key is you say he needs to find good, progressive coaches but he's never done that before. He could be good at that or he could be terrible. How many years can we afford to invest in finding out?

I agree. He has never done this and could be good or bad. On the time frame I’m just not sure. My concern on another coach is does Ma Tech have the finances to go get a proven, experienced head coach. I just don’t know what the right answer is at this point.

With anybody we hire, we are taking a gamble. One positive for Key is that he has a running start on any new guy we bring in. And he knows the climate at Tech, whereas a new guy would have to learn it. The rest of the season will show how much of a running start he actually has, and what he has done with it.
I know this isn’t popular here but Key is a Tech guy and I think he understands what it takes at GT. Dealing with The Hill is a facet I think he could handle and even improve.

the only game left I see as a definite loss is the last one, I think we can compete in the others. Do we? I have no clue

If we hire the right new coach, I would expect several players to come from the portal. The coaching hire will influence whether the portal flow is net positive or negative.

I can’t disagree, but whoever the coach is, I think there is talent on this roster and enough of it to be successful in the near future.

LSU has at least 2-3 true freshman starters on the offensive line. two are tackles. How many 4-5 star players at any position, other than lack of playing time transfers, do we have? Not many. You guys make out like we’re loaded with talent. We’re not. Collins recruited no better than cpj, except that the linemen were larger, not better. D. Smith played the best at r.b., but got very few carries. I’ve never seen much from Hassan hall. Does he ever fall forward after being hit? No.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. It all comes down to getting the Jimmie’s and joes on campus and then having the staff to coach them up.

I'm on board with this. The quarterback is supposed to be the offensive leader. Skill, effort, and leadership are strongly needed and I think those are contagious. Never thought I'd say this, but Thacker is turning out to be a decent coach and Tillman looks like a home run hire.

Well, he was CARRIED (literally) forward in that one awesome play against Duke.

Yeah the money is the big question. There are a couple coaches that look to be what I think we need right now but even if we go after them we still may go with Key just based off of finances. I just don't want us to immediately jump on a 6 win Key, but interview him normally along with others and do a real comparison.

We turned on Key pretty quick after Thursday’s loss. He came in mid season and has done a good job. I think he can be a good coach, but he’s just not what we need right now. We need someone who can make a splash on the national scene and get instant recruits thru the regular recruiting process and thru the portal.

We’ve had problems getting the players and we’ve had problems coaching the players. We need someone who can do both, and we need the money behind them to make it happen.

I picked Tech to be 3-4 at this point in the pre-season contest. Got the Pitt and UVA outcomes reversed.

Pre-season I assumed an ass-beating @ FSU, followed by the team quitting on Collins and losing out. Outside of VT the rest of the schedule is no picnic and figured Collins would exit with 4 years of 3 win seasons.

If Sims isn't healthy, this scenario is still in play, even with Key.
