Vance Walker

BME, they also refer to a definition of defenseless player at something called FR-9. Any idea what that is?

haywire83 posted this on page 1 (post#8) but here it is again:

• The quarterback moving down the line of scrimmage who has handed or pitched the ball to a teammate, and then makes no attempt to participate further in the play;
• The kicker who is in the act of kicking the ball, or who has not had a reasonable length of time to regain his balance after the kick;
• The passer who is in the act of throwing the ball, or who has not had a reasonable length of time to participate in the play again after releasing the ball;
• The pass receiver whose concentration is on the ball;
• The pass receiver who has clearly relaxed when the pass is no longer catchable;
• The kick receiver whose attention is on the downward flight of the ball;
• The kick receiver who has just touched the ball;
• The player who has relaxed once the ball has become dead; and
• The player who is obviously out of the play.

I looked at the replay and gotta go with NC on this.I don't like it but there is SOME justification for the call.
On top of that I really got to question Taylor thought process (if he wasn't a true Fr).Why hit him like that when he already was going down and I believe it would have been 4th and 7?
Not a good call but not the worse I've seen, even last wk-end.

I agree AlaGold,
I also think that if you re-look at ALL other plays of the game, that there should have been several hundred yards more of penalties. There were several more helmet to helmets near the sideline and dozens more near the middle of the field.
Like you, I really question the player's thought process in all of these dozens of plays.

Guys, it is hard to question the players thoughts until you are out there. I think if CT would have used his arms to wrap up along with the helmet or shoulder contact they might not have called it. Too many times in HS, College and NFL DB's moreso come in with helmets first.

I disagree. IMO, "borderline calls" should never be made, period. If it's not a clear foul then don't influence the game by calling it. If in doubt, leave it out, as the old saying used to go.
THANK YOU!!! Right after this call was made (i was in fla with my aunt a gator fan(no point)) my aunt said to me "I hate when ref's decide a game"

This is a play where the decision by a ref on a "borderline" call completely decided the outcome of a game...imo.

Ref's should know when momentum could completely change and not make a judgemental call in a borderline situation. THIS was one of those situations.

like baseball/basketball let the players even things out. let them get a good hit on us. let them commit an uncalled fall(basketball) or hit one of our players with the ball(baseball).

just make the game fair and even. don't be a deciding factor in the game.

To you and me it was borderline. To the ref, in full speed from his perspective it wasn't. This is also a rule, where it's supposed to be called if it's seen. They aren't supposed to worry about momentum in a game when they make a call. If refs start doing that, they just become part of the crowd. Also not calling a fou/penalty is deciding a game just as much as calling one is.

Again, I'm not saying it should be called. If you don't think it was a penalty that's one thing, it's after all a judgement call. But suggesting sometimes you should call it and sometimes you shouldn't makes no sense to me.

Mover has it right. Stop-action of the play shows Cooper leading with his helmet right before contact and it was that split-second impression captured by the ref's mind that pulled the flag on Cooper.

I'm sure CPJ has fixed that mental mistake this week.

Jacket Dan has it right. This rule is unenforceable without bringing the game to a halt. Flag football it is.

Ever look at a lineman's helmet right after a game...nuff said.

nc, I read the rule man. It's unenfoceable on a consistent basis. Lineman do tackle backs ya know. Ever look at a LB's helmet, a DE's helmet, a DB's helmet.

You are kinda hanging out to dry on this one budro.

Nah, you guys are ignoring the intent of the rule and hanging on the literal interpretation. But it's all good...you won't see it called inside because that's not what they're talking about.
