I don't think I understand this either goldmember, so I guess we're both a little slow. If the Headcoach can't make the decision about whether to set up for a field goal or go for broke and third and long, what purpose does he really serve? In this scenario would you really need the head coach to travel with the team? I can't imagine Spurrier, Urban Meyer, Les Miles, or any other winning coach stand for being put in such a box. If it has come to this at GT it is time to get a new HC and move on.
It's one thing if you have confidence in your coach. I think the difference might just be that we don't have confidence in our coach. Do you think any of those coaches you mentioned would have called 4 straight plays to try and set up a field goal? Spurrier would DEFINITELY gone for the TD. We have a coach that plays for close games.
Think about it - say we MAKE the field goal. MD has about a minute left. They need a FG to win. We kick off, chances are they return to around the 30 or so. They only have to go 40 yards in little under a minute to kick the game winner. I would feel much more confident about them having to go 70 to win the game than 40 against our bend not break pass defense...
