Vince Dooley Death Watch Thread

It should be pointed out that we honored Vince Dooley during the GT/UGAg game not too many years ago.

In his first three seasons at Georgia, Vince Dooley went 3–0 versus Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd. Ironically, Dooley was influenced by Dodd's style and approach to the game, and he was the first recipient of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award.

After he retired :

Vince Dooley
, former director of athletics, recently received the Homer Rice Award. The top award presented by the Division I-A Athletic Directors Association, it is presented annually to a retired athletic director with a distinguished career who has made a significant impact on the profession and intercollegiate athletics.

And yet he didn't care if his players were functionally illiterate. What a hero!

Coach Dooley is a class act and a complete gentleman. He was my head coach and I respect him. Will is who he is because of Coach Dooley... Like him or not. He is a Great man and coach. Larry was a really nice man also. I used to talk with him at practice. He was a really interesting fun guy. One of the best ever.

Here it is in all its glory. Another classic Braine-less move.

My Dad was a senior and captain of Auburn's '51 basketball team that Vince played on as a freshman. Yes, Vince was a football and basketball player at Auburn. They played for Joel Eaves, a groomsman in my parents' wedding and great influence on my Dad, and the man who hired Vince at UGA. Our family's problem with Vince was in his recruiting and some of the things he did related to Auburn. Dad was a high school coach in Atlanta and he felt like Vince said some things about Shug Jordan's health to influence recruits that seemed disloyal. But, they remained cordial and my brother and I last talked with Vince at a UGA-UNC basketball game in Chapel Hill several years ago. He asked us why we were wearing light blue and we said, "Because we are both Tech grads." His comment was a pretty surly, "Well I'll be danged." He's our rival, so I don't like him. But, he's probably OK. I've been around his late brother Bill to know he was a really nice guy.
