VT Loses

UNC needs to lose two of their remaining three... they have Maryland, NC State, and Duke on their schedule.

Geez, I just realized this but... all of our losses came from our own division. We are on the bottom of the list if it comes down to any tie-breaker.

Our poor chances to get to Tampa had me cheering for the Hokies - tonight just may have punched the Tarheels ticket. Ralph has to come through for me this weekend. Go Terps!

Checked the ACC site and GT can't win any 3 way ties b/c the 2nd tiebreaker is division record. However, GT can get in with a win over Miami and if VT, UNC, and UVA all finish with 4 losses. Here's what has to happen:

UNC loses 2 more: @ Maryland, vs. NC State, @ Dook
UVA loses 1 more: vs Clempson, @ VT
VT loses 1 more: @ Dook, vs. UVA

Of course, GT has to beat the U on Thursday. It's a little far fetched, but this could all certainly happen. If UNC loses to the turtles on Saturday then I think Tech is right back in the thick of things.

Just for analysis sake:

If GT, UM, UNC & VT all finish 5-3

..with GT defeating UM, UNC losing @Md, VT defeating UVA

Then by the first tiebreaker, combined head-to-head;
UNC 2-1
VT 2-1
GT 1-2
UM 1-2

This reduces the tie to two teams, thus the two-team tiebreaker is then employed, head-to-head;
VT -20
UNC -17

So if GT defeats UM, UNC loses @Md and VT beats UVA --assuming VT defeats Duke-- then VT wins the Coastal.

But if UNC wins @Md, v. NCSt and @Duke, and UM wins @GT, then by virtue of their win @UM, UNC wins the Coastal.

UVA loses 1 more: vs Clempson, @ VT

We probably should not pretend anyone can lose to Duke...and unfortunately NCState for that matter. The only plausible scenario I see is:

1) We beat Miami
2) UVA loses to Clemson
3) UVA beats VT
4) UNC loses to Maryland...and...arrgh...either NCState or Duke. That is the part I have little faith in.

Wow. That's farfetched, but it isn't as farfetched as I thought it would be. I hadn't bothered to brew up any scenarios since the UNC loss.

I agree that it's pretty nutty to think UNC could lose to Duke or State, but both of those are rivalry games, so anything could happen. And Duke is much improved, and going to be playing for their first bowl season in a zillion years.

Duke beat Vandy, took Wake to OT, and put up 31 on Miami. They also beat UVA 31-3 and beat Navy. Duke's only truly noncompetitive loss this year was to Tech.

NC State on the other hand, is freaking wretched. Their only wins are over Duke, ECU, and William and Mary.

I don't see UNC losing two of three, unless they get a major injury somewhere. I don't think either NC State or Duke are good enough to pull that off.

I would believe that Duke would have a better chance of defeating UNC in Durham then NCSt has of winning in Chapel Hill --but both are probably far-fetched.

From the Hive - if you assume every remaining game in the ACC Coastal is a coin flip, these are the chances of each team going to the ACCCG:

Miami 42.2%
UNC 26.6
GT 12.5
VT 10.9
UVA 7.8

That's not as terrible as I thought it would be.

IF all that pans out, then I would see no ranked teams left in the ACC, sept FSU. Positive thinking, but don't see it panning out that way. We'd be better off just focusing on winning out and going to Jacksonville or Atlanta.

I think if we win out, we're ranked. I think we may even be ranked if we beat Miami. We're a likable team.

yeah... y'all dream. Lets focus on next week, then UGAg... then our bowl. ACCCG talk needs to pick up next year. I love my Jackets, but that's where we are right now.

UNC won't lose two of their remaining three. And Virginia won't lose at home to Clemson. If it's essentially a two horse race between Miami & UNC, I'd rather see UNC win the Coastal.

Just how crazy is the ACC this year ...

With only 14 games remaining, all but 3 teams (Duke, Clemson, NC State) have shots (and all are reasonably plausible) at going to the championship game.

Three teams "control their own destiny" ie, they go if they win out:
UNC (3-2, Md, NCS & Duke remaining)
Maryland (3-2, UNC, FSU & BC remaining)
Boston College (2-3, FSU, WF & Md remaining).

No way does UNC lose 2 more. Nice to dream, but I'll focus on Miami and UGAg. It would be nice to finish ranked and going to the Chik-Fil-A bowl or Jacksonville.

Did anyone else feel embarrassed that the Chik-Fil-A bowl scouts were at the UNC game?! :(
