Was it me or did Coach Gailey look like...

he was about to cry when Jill Arrington interviewed him directly following the half? He looked completely shell shocked, confused and emotionally off track.

The reason why I ask is that I've never seen a coach look like that during a game. He looked like he was ready to start weeping at any time. Maybe he was just in awe of Jill's beauty? After all she can bring any man to tears with that face.

I know what you mean... he reminded me of Donnan two years ago...

Please don't say the word Donn_n. Everytime I hear that word I just want to soil something. ;-)

glad to see you posting again DB, seems that you have been quiet for too long. btw: doesn't Gailey have at least one fewer losing season (out of one) than our friend Mr. Donn_n had?

That is definitely hitting below the belt.

Donnan always seemed to me that he was in dire need of an enema.....

Thanks Cycle Jacket, I really enjoy talking football with you guys.

This is going to sound a little bizarre, but I've studied leadership on various levels for a number of years and one intangible that all good leaders have is a "look" that exudes confidence and inspires people around them to jump through fire. I never liked Donnan because of the way he presented himself on and off the field. He had the face of a sour puss. He never had the eyes of a great leader and he never demanded the type of effort required to win championships at a SEC level. Discipline was a four letter word to Donnan, hence all the player violations and trouble surrounding the program. Unfortunately for Tech, Gailey has that same type of look about him. His mannerisms don't provide the presense of a leader. He couldn't get it done in Dallas because he isn't a 4 star general. Like Donnan he is a decent X's & O's coach who understands all aspects of the game, but neither man has the intangible leadership qualities that set them apart from guys like Spurrier, Bowden, Osborne, Paterno and many other winners.

Mark Richt isn't Einstein, but he has tremendous character and a fire in his eyes. He knows all the nuances of building a national championship program because he learned it from one of the greatest of all time in Bobby Bowden. Richt is a 4 star general because he expects to win and knows how to inspire his players to believe they can win against any opponent under any circumstance. It may not always happen, but the important part is to get the players to believe that they should expect to win. Richt is calm and cool under pressure, which is an extremely important quality in a leader. A lot of Tech fans are mad at Gailey because he stood off to the side and didn't get in the face mask of his players. Yelling and screaming looks good on TV, but in the long run it breeds contempt. There is a difference between detachment and being cool under pressure, in the later you are continuously engaged but are in control.

IMO, Braine made a mistake when he hired Gailey. I think he will do a good job of keeping you competitive in the ACC, but I really don't believe he will bring a National Championship to Tech. One look at his face and it is obvious... like I said it sounds strange.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">DB,
It was clear to some of us last December.
It is clear to many of us this December.
It will be clear to virtually all of us by another December, or two (heaven help us).

I think it is way too early to call the Gailey hiring a mistake (beeware's constant bleatings notwithstanding). It is fair to say that there are some changes to be made as a result of the season. We shall see if Chan is smart enough to recognize them and make the proper correction. I do feel that he took a little more of a CEO approach to the position than is appropriate for college football. At least part of this is understandable because of his background in the the NFL. I could also speculate that he was told certain assistant were prepared for bigger roles than they actually were and that turned out not to be true. But, that is pure speculation on my part. Any way, the jury is out, it is a good thing for Chan (and GT football) that it doesn't consist entirely of Hivers and StingTalkers :-).

Interesting idea about looking the part. Certainly little consistency from some folks though. The same AD who hired Bill Lewis hired Bobby Ross. The same AD who hired Jim Donn_n and Ron Jirsa hired Mark Richt (of course, the prez may be different now, is that correct?). Could we agree that perhaps Bear Bryant epitomizes that theory more than anyone else I can think of in college football?

Dawg..

Like you I have studied and taught leadership over the years... I think you are putting too much into the "look" .. .Dooley didnt, and never has had that "look" ... neither did Bobby Ross.. but those guys seem to do pretty well... Larry Coker doesnt have that "look" but seems to be doing well... Richt didnt have that look last year in the Music City Bowl !!

I think one of the reasons that things have worked out so well for Richt is that you guys finally got fed up with losing to Fla, Tenn, and Tech... if Georgia had given Donnan the same support that has been given Richt things could have been much better Donnan... the support wasnt there from the beginning ... there was hope, but very little support.. even Lorne and Larry didnt like Donnan early on...

Dont read too much into what you read on message boards... most that post on here are just posters who MAYBE send a contribution of $500 a year and buy a couple of season tickets... many wont do that much... this is just a hobby to them to pass the time..

We got our heads handed to us this past Saturday... and unlike some others on here... I think we are in good hands with Gailey... the situation that O'Leary left was much worse than most want to believe.. Gailey did a respectable job this year... and we will be waiting for you guys next year in Atlanta...

The Detroit Lions' coach (Morningweg {sp}) looks like a Bowden. More specifically, Tater Tot Bowden.

jacketguy:

Do you think GT is fed up with being mediocre or high-mediocre in a middling conference? Do you think we are giving CCG the support that was given GOL?

If the rumors of the academics war on the athletics department are true, I would say the answer is no from the administration. If the tenor of the debate on the GT message boards is representative (I doubt it is, but nonetheless), the answer is no from the most vocal portion of the fan base. If the apparent effort on the field Saturday is more than an aberration, then the answer is no from the players and coaching staff.

If the difference in the dawgs success is explained by support, we are doing little or nothing to emulate that formula and most assuredly have condemned ourselves to the middle of the pack in an average conference.

This is really informative. So now we can look at a coach and know if he's a leader or not by studying the look on his face? Dawgbyte, you're welcome on this board. But your post is pure hogwash, IMO.

Doggie - This is the lottery winning post. Leaders and winners have a presence and they will it upon their teams. All the rest of the arguments I've read are just the noise in the data. Records analyzed in a vacuum don't mean squat. It's how a team plays that counts. Look at our hoops team. PH has about the same winning percentage in his first 2 years as CG does this year. But PH is absolutely a winner and his teams play like winners and they play with heart because he won't allow anything less. I've not seen the same out of CG and our football team and it sure does seem like it's awfully late in the game for an old dog to learn a new trick.
