Way too early speculation...

Well ask yourselves this, if you were given the reins of Georgia Tech football and given an opportunity to build a team that wins 10 games, maybe become a playoff team or even win the whole thing would you go to Bama if they offered you $10M instead of $4M? We will build a statue for the man if he can accomplish those things but Bama would fire him in 2 years if he’s not making the playoffs. When Geoff Collins said that this was his dream job I didn’t believe him for a second but without Key making any such remarks I know this is his dream job. He’s here for life.

I believe RichRod loved WVU. He had them humming at a pretty high level. But he left for the money.

Our ceiling is likely 9 win seasons. With the playoff system, we could probably make a once a decade appearance by winning the ACC.

Is that enough to satisfy a top coach? There aren’t many like the coach at Iowa. Most will leave a good situation to take a shot at being a college football legend like Saban, not a school legend like Beamer.

Naïveté is not as cute as you think it is

Say CBK continues to recruit and build a staff and become more coaching savvy. Say we get a few 10+ win seasons in a row in 3-4 years...

CLEARLY other, bigger programs would be coming for Key. To my knowledge he only has a relationship with Bammer and of course Tech.

I think it would take a lot to get Key away from us, but you can't blame a guy for getting his dough if given an opportunity at a so-called "Top Program"

Any other schools that Key might have any connection with that might tempt him? I think Bammer's gotta be one due to history and history

I agree.

But a shot at a "traditional football power" with financial security should and would likely be considered at some point. Who might have an in, like did his dad play somewhere, any other family, any ADs he might have worked under before, any kids approaching college years? Etc
I just don't see that ever happening. I think he truly LOVES Georgia Tech

There is enough money in Atlanta to pay him no matter who calls. But as noted, with the big paycheck come the requirements for unreasonable results. Especially with the parity brought about by the NIL system.

Here’s a Way Too Early top 25 I saw online.

The truest thing on there is “North Carolina for some reason.”

It's hard to imagine anything worse than the dangers that could come our way if we have four 10+ win seasons. It's just too awful to contemplate.

I feel like it’s fairly accepted knowledge at this point that Rich Rod left WVU b/c he knocked up a cheerleader which caused some internal pressure to move on. I’m sure $ helped ease the pain but I’m not so sure he leaves without the extracurriculars.

WVU offered him everything to stay. Alabama and Michigan were offering huge money to leave. RichRod could have knocked up the entire cheer team and still been welcome at WVU.

That would certainly make for an interesting pep rally.

Again, that’s not what is generally accepted. WVU absolutely wanted him and Rich Rod wanted to be there. But he also knew his stock was high and tried to leverage his other offers to get WVU to ramp up resources for the football program. WVU wasn’t willing to commit to that with a scandal and let him walk.

Also lol to that last comment. Like 5 years later Arkansas fired Petrino after their best season in 30+ years because they found out he was banging an intern. Maybe the money is big enough now for a Clemson / UGA / OSU to try to sweep things under the rug for a guy they deemed too valuable to lose, but no program in that era would have stomached a student being impregnated.

Schools in that era stomached child sexual abuse, rape, and coach-student affairs. You only got run off if you had a booster pushing the firing or poor performance.

What schools kept coaches after an affair with a student? What schools kept coaches after they raped somebody?

Penn State I get what you’re saying. ööööing insane to this day. Not much of an argument from me there.

But we’re kind of straying from the original point here. Rich Rod didn’t leave solely for money. He wanted to be at WVU but a combination of reasons caused him to leave for a bigger job. That’s not my opinion. That’s what happened.

RichRod’s primary driver was having the resources to win a national title. Everything else was window dressing. WVU realized that and jumped to a conference that was an awful fit to correct some of their problems.

I understand that coaches want to see if they can win it all. That’s what makes guys who stay at the smaller schools all the more special. If Key got the nod from UF, I wouldn’t fault him for making that jump. If he jumped to SC, I’d think he was a fool.
