We Need More Qua Searcy Love

Ok, any numbers on TQM reads versus other QBs. The 2017 offense had a 23rd rank FEI. TQM reads were fine. The defense forced him to keep the ball. In general I agree his reads may be just behind Tevin and JT, but he was good and it was his first year at QB... for real, his very first year as he started as an AB and then spent a year injured.

If you want to see improvement from TQM, it is in the passing game.

Did an analysis last year. Too lazy to find it... TQM doesn’t pitch the ball. QB keep, BBack dive. That’s it. Go to last year’s stats and see how few runs our ABacks had. TQM ain’t good unless he can spread the ball around. We ded this year unless he’s learned how to do that.

I think just looking at the numbers doesn’t tell the whole story. If there’s a guy coming for the pitch or a missed block out there, don’t pitch it.
In this case, as PJ is wont to say, we have to look at the film.
There are going to be times TQM should have pitched. But I also wonder how many times it was a one man or two man read, instead of a triple

Marshall definitely needs to improve his reads, but that comes with time. IMO he's as good as even JT or Nesbitt as running the ball. Breakaway speed that Nesbitt didn't have, and ability to run inside that JT didn't have. I'm not sure what we'll get out of him this year, but the potential is absolutely there.

He can run because he’s an a
A-Back playing QB. No question that he’s athletic, but if he doesn’t run the process it doesn’t matter. Our only plays last year were QB keep and BBack dive, and as soon as other teams figured that out, we were toast.

I am going to assume that finding a competent quarterback is high on the list every recruiting cycle. It is frustrating that we have not done better in finding that player that makes the entire offense better. Even the academies seem to find a guy that can get it done more often than we can.

He seems to have great vision to see the lanes and follow his blocking, especially on the edge. But I am not sure that his reads will improve. Someone else pointed out that maybe he is making the right read and often that read is to keep it. It definitely seems that he is anticipating the keeper and not the pitch, but that may be what the defense is giving.

I think the pitch metric is different for guys like JfN and Marshal. They can typically get 2 yards on the keep. So there is less incentive to pitch. TM needs to improve on that, because he missed on some big yardage pitches by playing it safe.

Early in the year, I think defenses were taking the pitchman. After Wake, I think they started keying on the QB and TM didn’t adjust.

My thoughts exactly. After great sucess against Tennessee, Pitt, UNCheat, and Wake on the keep he seemed to look for it and wait for it to develop.

Against Clemson, UGAg, and even Duke, it never really did.

Thus by the time he pitched it was way too late.

@JRJacket You cannot look at the number of pitches per year and say he does not pitch it enough. You have to look at each play and understand if he was suppose to pitch and did not. The defense was taking the pitch man and forcing TQM to keep the ball. Do you want him to pitch the ball if the read takes the Aback? If I was running the defense I would force him to keep the ball and force him inside into "help" as a pitch is money on the outside.

I will give you this, his counter options where sometimes truncated as he turned it up very early versus charging his read and pitching.

Rocket tosses were also down/reduced/lower number of calls last year as well.

I do have a boring but very informative youtube channel that slows down each play...

Yea no, I get it... but I hardly believe that last year was markedly different than the 9 other years prior in the number of pitches being taken away by the defenses we faced. I’d be willing to bet that there’s not a drastic difference from year to year, in aggregate, on what the correct reads should have been. So to see a drastic downtick in AB touches is most likely due to the QB keeping too much...

On the 2 point conversion attempt in OT vs. Tennessee his pitch was way too late.

Something else you have to consider is that the current A-back group is probably the most deep and dynamic we have ever had. Lynch and Searcy especially are playmakers, so I could see defenses scheming to take the ball out of their hands.

Arm strength and accuracy on the deep ball. The option reads will work themselves out. If he has improved his arm strength and accuracy, as he says he's been working on it, defenses will have to soften up or suffer getting beat deep.

I have the feeling that at least some of the problem last year was related to the OL. If TQM gets better protection, both his decision making and passing will improve. Hoping for better depth and experience on the line this season.

OL is always the scapegoat. If the QB overthrows or underthrows his receiver, or throws a pick it is always the OL's fault. Am I getting this right. If the QB is 5'10" and can't see downfield, then it is the OL's fault for being too damn tall. The short QB has to now take a 12-15 step drop to be able to see over those overgrown brutes on the OL. It is no wonder he can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Doesn't matter how tall they are if they all just flop and flail.
