What people are saying is any final judgement is premature and wasted energy. Collins is going to be here 3-4 years minimum. He is not going to be on a hot seat of any kind until his 3rd year. Any criticism of him is logically and easily rebuffed by the recruiting level before he got here and the change in scheme.

In 2021, there will be a lot of actual evidence to offer substance criticism of Collins and his future with GT. Until then it is 90% about style and that you just don't like the guy or get so butt hurt over loses that it blinds you to the realities of life and college football.

Bottom-line to me: no reason to make yourself miserable. There were plenty of GT fans that hated Gailey after his first season and bad lost to UGA so they were miserable for 6 (7?) more seasons for no good reason. Same with a few that hated Johnson from the start because of his offense.

The talk around campus after Bobby Ross’ first season in 1987 was that maybe we should drop down a division or get rid of football altogether since it was an embarrassment to the institute. I remember hearing the question asked, “Why can’t we at least be mediocre, like NCState?”

Three seasons later we won a share of the MNC.

I don't recall anyone wanting to drop down to lower division after Ross' first season. We were just coming off a string a pretty good season ('84 & '85 we had beaten Georgia) with '86 being the low point at 0.500. People wanted to fire Ross in his first year because all he could beat was the Citadel and Indiana. That discussion of dropping down to a lower division may have occurred in '80-'81, those days were rough; but by '87 peoples expectations were higher and they were blaming Ross.
 
I went to a small alumni meeting in Winston-Salem summer 1989. Bobby Ross was there to speak to us. In his first two seasons at Tech we'd been 2-9 and 3-8 with not a single ACC win. I sat next to Coach Ross during dinner. He was a very humble quiet guy. The only thing I remember from our conversation was his answer to my question about prospects for 1989 after graduating most of our '88 starters. He said (paraphrasing), "You probably haven't heard much about these guys. They're inexperienced but more talented than what we've had." We lost our first three games in 1989, but then went on to win seven of our last eight. We were not invited to a bowl game. But the table was set for 1990.
 
I remember Ross's news interview preceding the UGA game in 1990 when asked how he felt about the upcoming game. His reply was something like: "Well, they've out recruited us every year I've been here so I don't see how we have a chance." Of course we thumped them 40-23 with our lower ranked recruits.
 
There's a logic to our OL recruiting (length!) and that's encouraging. Height + weight = SIZE. We'll see how it works out.

What I'm concerned about is the lack of DTs in our current recruiting class. We have like 0 or 1 and it's a position we're weak at.

Agreed. We do get Lee back with an additional year of development. Hopefully we can pick up one or more in the transfer portal with immediate eligibility.

I like your post but you lost me here... people who didn't like CCG at the beginning were probably validated over the following years. I think that's the opposite of the point you're trying to make about CGC, namely, give the guy a chance because things are probably going to get better.

We have one that is a heavy lean and one we are neck and neck with Bama on. Not sure is CGC has a backup plan.

Not sure about that. He did about as good as Johnson on average and they played a lot of good football off an on. Lot of good wins. How does hating the coach help you to enjoy that kind of stuff? Sort of like hating you parents but showing up at Thanksgiving hoping to have a good time. Love your parents good or bad.

The simple point is, when you hire a guy, you should give him support to do his job; that includes supporting him and the program during those early years.

Gailey didn't get the support from the administration that he deserved and it was a few boosters that turned on Gailey earlier in his tenure. That very well could have had a negative impact on administration support and recruiting. I think Tstan will ensure that doesn't happen; that is a very important part of this piece. The worst thing that could happen is that the fans turn so negative that Collins doesn't even get to build the foundation of what he is trying to do. Plenty of fanbases do that to there program so they wallow in mediocre for a long time because not everyone is pulling in the same direction.

The same thing happened to Johnson: plenty of boosters had turned away from him and MBob didn't support the program. Who knows if Johnson could have done better with better resources but we will never know. If we do the same with Collins then everyone will be worse off.

Except that if you hire a bad coach, you should want him gone ASAP...? I'm not saying any of these guys are bad coaches, but the 'boosters' you're talking about were acting pretty rationally. The last thing they want to do is to keep supporting someone who's never going to make it no matter how much support they get, and continue to drag the program for years through the mediocre mud.

Imagine you're an FSU booster right now...!

I don't think most of those type of people: fans or boosters have a clue so they are just guessing. They are wrong as often as they are right so I don't want them deciding to run off a guy that might end up being a good coach. It can take time and good coaches can have bad times, there are numerous examples. The negativity can turn a success into an self fulfilling failure.

Also, remember that it was FSU boosters that contributed to Jimbo leaving and it was FSU boosters that loved and hired Taggart. So you are saying a group that is basically 0-2 should make the next decision.

Yes the O was not the problem.... The Defense or lack of..... Which is surprising as CGC is suppose to be a Defensive Guru... In regards to the O..CBK guy at Center Lay is doing awesome (great calls at the line)and CDP QB JG is doing really well!! TOng out scored at WR so it ia ll working out...Just need a defense

VT has done well for years with an undersized line. What we can’t have are repeated 3 and outs (especially in hurry ups).

I’ll wait to judge the DL once our offense reaches the top of the bottom quartile.
