What did we have in 2014

All of the above - Mason, B-backs, luck, week to week improvement, but most of all, confidence. Our confidence has been shot since South Bend. It does not look like anybody is having much fun out there on the field.

PJ hasn't criticized the defense much over the past couple games. Didn't hear the post game today.

What does that tell you? I always heard, "when the coach stops yelling at you, then you know you suck."

Post game he was more critical of o leaving points on field. Kind of feel like he's thrown hands up on defense. Not good. He's responsible for that side of ball, too.

I don't want roof to leave. Compare when we beat miss st in the orange bowl... we couldn't stop them either. Nor unc that year, etc

Belief that we are actually good. We play like we don't think we are talented because all the press about us is how we aren't talented.

We had Gotsis. He demanded attention. That gave Freeman a chance to pass rush.

Laskey and Days.

This. More than the just the physical work they put in, it was about their leadership. I don't think we have the leadership in the locker room that we had in 2014. It seems to me Justin is more of a lead by example type of guy than vocal and that doesn't always rally the troops. Not speaking bad about Justin, I'm grateful for all the things he's done and I wish we had him for another year. But next year I hope somebody will step up and lead.

We had luck like the OP said. The GSU win was luck. Watson getting hurt in the first quarter of the Clemson game was luck (he was marching their offense down the field like a knife through butter before we got the gift of Cole Stoudt). The Pitt game where they turned the ball over 30 times in the first quarter, enough said. The VT and Ugay games could have gone either way, though we did get hosed on that gift touchdown the refs gave those ööögots on the "fumble" and subsequent return.

We dominated Virginia, NC State, the cupcakes, and Mississippi State. The rest of that season was fluke city.

Really, ööögots is censored? Didn't realize this place had turned into a safe space.

i agree we got lucky quite a bit, but we did have our share of bad luck. Like entire Duke game, Smelter and Snoddy flukish injuries, and especially FSU. FSU had a turnover in every regular season game. Had 0 vs us and magically have 7 vs Oregon.

It's all been covered in previous posts here, the 3 that stick out for me...

Experience at AB and BB -Laskey and Days were team leaders, and AB's like Perkins, Bostic, and Andrews could block. ...To me this is what is severely missing over the past two seasons.

Special players like Mason and Gotsis ...Mason was a special player and Gotsis demanded attention on the DL, freeing up guys like Freeman to rush the QB.

Attitude and confidence -sorely lacking since ND 2015 in my opinion.

With Laskey we KNEW he was not going to get stuffed or thrown for a loss on any play, much less 3rd/4th and 1. This gives a level of confidence and a lot of options on what to do in a variety of situations.

The real question is what did we have in 1990. The answer is a 41-38 win over and 8-4 UVA team. Greatest win in GT history.

And Shaq Mason. Sweet, lovely Shaq Mason who would drive 2-3 guys back and never let us down.

Indeed he was.

But what does it say about a program that falls apart this much 2 years after a single O lineman has left the program?

Perhaps one of the biggest indictments of a coaching staff I can imagine.

We could just about be assured he wasn't going to fumble the ball either. 2 career fumbles at BB I believe in 3 years. Hell, we get that now in a single game.

2014 every offensive play. Enjoy. Watch it over and over looking at different things. One of those times, watch it and keep your eye on Shaq Mason the entire time.
