If CCG goes...then my choices in order are:

1. Jimbo Fisher - OC at FSU
2. Paul Johnson - HC at Naval Academy
3. Dan Mullen - OC ay Florida

I think any of these guys would do an excellent job on The Flats!!

Each would bring their own style.

I know this topic has been bantered to death recently, but what the heck we gotta pass the time somehow until Miami makes a decision.

Chime in with your opinions!!

I have not been digging too much, but Jimbo Fisher does seem to make some sense if we can keep most of our current staff in place.

I do not like Paul Johnson at all...and there is a reason he is never mentioned in other opening at BCS conference schools.

Dan Mullen is too green. He was a graduate assistant coach until 2000. Then was a QB coach at Bowling Green and Utah before becoming the OC at Florida in 2005. So...2 years as a coordinator and only 6 years removed from being a GA. His next stop should be HC of a second tier football program...in my humble opinion.

I know he only has one year of HC experience....but the HC of Boise State, Chris Petersen would be worth talking to. He was OC at Boise State for 6 years previous to that....and was at Oregon in the 90s's. Downside is all of his experience and ties are out west.

I just need to dig some more.

Those would all be fine choices Mover.......

I like Dave Cutcliffe and here's why.

Cutcliffe compiled a 44-29 record with the Rebels from 1999-2004 and coached Ole Miss to four bowl victories against one loss. He was the only Rebels coach in history to win at least seven games in each of his first five seasons. Under Cutcliffe's tutelage as offensive coordinator from 1993-99, Tennessee twice led the SEC in total offense and three times was the league's rushing leader. The Vols led the SEC in scoring in 1993 and placed second nationally with an average of 42.8 points per game.

He won at Ole Miss.....not been done since.....:p

And more importantly, the man knows how to beat the mutts :p

Of those three, I'd be most comfortable handing the reins of this thing over to Jimbo Fisher. Paul Johnson is used to the tough academic requirements of a service academy, but methinks his triple option attack is a bit of a novelty and I have doubts about its efficacy against ACC defenses. Dan Mullen is a coordinator for a national championship program (like Jimbo), but with Urban Meyer calling the plays, I'm concerned that he may be a very Patrick Nix of last year type of offensive coordinator... by title only.

Cutcliffe is an Alabama grad....have they ever considered him before? Also..how is his health since his heart attack? He is only 52 years old.
Wow...he was at Tennessee from 1982 to 1998!

This is a hard one to figure....I do not know him that well.

Good looking list. Hopefully, regardless of the outcome there will be SOME winning side to all of this.

I like Ken Whisenhunt......and yes, we CAN hire him away from Arizona for the HC @ GT job.

Cutcliffe is the real deal. We'd be lucky to get him.

Aside from the names on this thread, imo to have even a reasonable chance at success, we must have a staff with very good Georgia and Florida recruiting connections.

You think he would leave 4 years short of the life-time NFL pension?

I agree on Fisher and Johnson. I know a lot of people think Johnson's offense wouldn't work in a BCS conference, but his offenses have been successful wherever he's coached. He has tweaked his offense at each school to best utilize the talent he has on the team.

I've seen several posters say that his offense is boring to watch, but IMO it is one of the most exciting. I think that he would probably run something of a mix between our current offense and the option that he runs at Navy (and I think it would be successful).

Keep in mind that his Navy team played BC down to the wire in their bowl game without their 1st string QB (injured during the middle of the season). Down ACC or not, BC had a very talented team this year.

Cutcliffe, everybody who knows college football says it was absurd that Ole Miss let him go and his success at Tenn as OC speaks for itself. Plus, with that SEC HC experience to build off of, I think he'll only be better at the next HC job he gets. If we don't grab him, it'll be another BCS school soon enough.

Why do you think Paul Johnson is never included in any coach search for HC openings in BCS conferences?

mOOKIE,

I could live with that choice as well. I admit he would bring some offense back to The Flats for sure.

Thanks for the extra stats as well.

Haywire, gotta agree wid ya on Paul Johnson. I think he would adapt his personnel to what he would have here on The Flats.

I think to many people underestimate him because of the offense he runs, but it does work in most cases.

No way in hell would he leave AZ at this time for GT. Maybe in a few years if he's not successful and the writing's on the wall, but let's hope it's more than a few years before we're in this situation again (and that he is successful).

haywire, I like the Triple Option O always have but there is to much speed in the BCS to use it the way PJ does.
The real problem in the BCS is selling the high profile QB's and WR's, they don't want to play in that style of O, most prefer an NFL style offense.
There's a reason nobody uses it other than 1aa and HS teams.
