What if we'd stayed in the SEC? (link)...

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

Beeware,

Sometimes, I think you'd argue with a ham sandwich if it was served by DB/CG.

Seriously, I'm through arguing about whether CG or Mac is the better choice. Let's all hope that CG can get us to that elusive next level.

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

On the hive kissing Hive RR? Why would I do that? How am I toeing the company line? Like others, I am excited about Gailey, but simply because I feel that he was the most qualified of all the candidates and I have stated why. Ahso has done the same, w/you never once stating your case.

Further, the smiley face giving me the finger is fantastic. If you cannot respond w/out one of your standard four responses and you cannot articulate your opinion beyond Braine sucks and positive leadership, then we know who clearly has the weaker arguement, correct?

Banter on these boards is entertaining, but not when only one side can present an arguement. C'mon, you can do better. Tell us why on Coach Mac.

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

jacketguy,

help me out. When has beeware made a good point about Coach Mac getting the royal screw job other than to say Braine sucks? I would love to read his take, but he has yet to state his reasons why beyond making fun of Gailey and calling Braine a loser. Is it in the archives somewhere?

jacketguy....good point... Dodd may could have pulled it off if he could have coached another 20 years or so *vbg*

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

I think the point concerning Mac is this.. it didnt appear that Braine was as upfront with Mac as he should have been... Braine did state that he was not considering anyone on the current staff, but once he interviewed Mac, that statement became subordinate to fact at that point. It was reported in the Columbus paper on Christmas Day that Gailey had been offered or would be offered the job.. if that was the case.. Braine should have communicated this to Mac... or in my opinion he should have... we dont really know what was said or not said between the two, just that Mac expressed his disappointment in the way that things were handled, which would lead me to believe that Braine could have been somewhat more professional about it....

I do not think a win in the Seattle Bowl justifies giving Mac the HC position... and obviously Braine didnt think that way either.. but for some reason, Mac thought this was the case... In my opinion, that bowl told us little.. we had finished the season on a sour note, were not expected to win, thus, there was little pressure on the team... if anything I think this could be of some clinical use for coaching in the future... but thats about it... I dont know that Mac would have used the same tactics etc... if we were playing FSU for the ACC title...

In terms of the selection, again, I think Braine made the right choice, I think Gailey will prove to be a good selection for us, I like what I am seeing thus far, and from what I hear from those associated with the team, the changes are positive... we are going to have a great year this year.. we needed a change

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

I remember seeing/hearing this recently. What (they said) hurt GT the most was the academic qualifications. Once we started requiring Calculus of recruits, we lost out big time. Evidently (they say) B.Dodd was against this bar-raising and that every major recruiting rival of ours (Vince Dooley, Bear Bryant, etc) would leave a Calculus textbook at the recruits' home as if to say "can your son hack this? because he'll have to if he goes to GT". Evidently they still do that.

So in conclusion, they say, THIS is what hurt us most over the years and NOT pulling out of the SEC. Your thoughts?

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

I don't think Tech had much choice about leaving the SEC. The conference was an academic joke, excepting maybe Vandy, and GT was making national moves. It's a tribute to you alumni that Tech continued in major college ball. IMHO, the mistake was going indy, instead of finding-or creating-a conference which would be a better fit.

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

JacketFanPCB,

I don't think that the Calculus thing had much of an affect on recruiting. Some, yes, but not a lot. I think the lure of SEC ball in the '70s and '80s would have lured many our way regardless of Calc. Besides, the Management curriculum does NOT require the "real" Calculus that engineers take. There is a Math sequence that MGT majors take, and it does touch on Calc a little bit, but is in NO way the same as the Calc I, II & III sequence required for engineers, CS majors, etc. I know, because I graduated from Tech in 1998.

There are NUMEROUS dynamics that affected our downturn in the late sixties through the early eighties. Leaving the SEC was undoubtably the catalyst for it. Pro sports coming to ATL played a part, as did Urban decay, etc.

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

bellyseries,

I think that a lot of the overwhelming credit for GT continuing to compete at the major college level goes to Homer Rice. He got the $$$ alumni involved again as well as helped to upgrade facilities that were in poor shape.

That is an interesting point that you made regarding not getting into a conference right away. Hypothesizing about how we would have done joining the ACC right away had it been possible would be a good topic for another thread. I have no idea other than to think that we would not have fallen as far as we did in the early 80's which unfortunately coincided w/our biggest rival's best years.

Still, I do think that we are a better fit in the ACC than the SEC.

Beeware, your inability to articulate your position on Coach Mac is amusing. You are one clever Ugag fan to be able to stir the pot the way you do!

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

OK, looks like we need a "Football" board, a "Basketball" board, an "Other Sports" board, a "Technology" board and a "beeware vs GT 98" board

Re: What if we\'d stayed in the SEC? (link)...

Let me chime in a little late(darn finals!!)
In Dodd's Luck, The Grey Fox says himself that the ACC was a better fit for GT. His argument(if I remember correctly) was that
1.the big state universities could recruit anyone and hide them in whatever program would keep them eligible.
2. The ACC's smaller enrollments meant you weren't fighting for the common fan's interest. The bulk of your fan base was pre-fabbed.
3. Frank Broyles has a quote about maybe the 50 team. He says that for Tech it was never a good season unless they beat U[sic]Ga. We always limited our joy based on that game 9-0 until Thanksgiving-> Good Season if we won, awful season if we lost.

Remember Tulane had similiar issues with the lack of integrity in the SEC. I disagree that we'd have a bigger stadium, but our support facilities would be better.
To be absolutely honest in the assessment. If we don't leave in '66, we become Ole Miss or LSU.
Recurrent Burgeoning powers that can't get over the hump.
