What is the "U" on Miami\'s helmets ?

What does it represent? Is it a weather symbol for a hurricane? They're in our conference now, we should know these things.

I thought the hurricane warning symbol was a black square on a red square flag.

Their mascot is some sort of crane. Supposedly it's the only animal that won't run (or fly) away from a hurricane. Weird.

Of course we, the Yellow Jackets, drive a car on our field - so who am I to critisize?

Since I'm actually in the state of Florida, and have received my email about Hurricane Season from the Insurance people....

A Hurricane symbol is two red squares stacked vertically on the yard arm, both having black squares on the field of the red squares.

The "U" logo, is just that, a logo.
Since approximately 30 D1 schools had a combination of the letters U and M, Miami chose a definitve symbol -- the Split U with their colors as their primary logo.

Thus their students refer to themselves as attending the U.
It's somewhat appropriate as Miami was formerly known as Suntan U.

The U is used on weather maps or so I am told. I like Gator's explanation.

Their Mascot is called an Ibis, a bird found in the Everglades and Egypt. Its the last sign of wildlife before a hurricane and the first to reappear after the storm...or so they say...funny...I always thougt it was a duck. There is information on the athletic web site under the traditions heading!

GT g8r, I thought the yardarm was horizontal, actually perpendicular to the mast? If so,how can you stack two red squares vertically?

...is a picture of an Ibis? I think they should go back to the ol' pipe smoking, stork-looking logo...

I actually had a long argument about this years ago, and we literally called their athletic dept and asked...Like GTg8er said above ----&gt;

It stands for the "University", which is apparently the slang down there for Miami -

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">I have heard the same thing as Gold Rush: "University."
It looks like a couple of hockey sticks to me.
