What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

He inherited a 5-5-1 team and went 2-9, didn't he? Three years later, he won the MNC.

Just another extension of what Goldtimer was saying below.

Yeah, and I am going out and betting on that happening again.

Unfortunately for CG we've all gotten accustomed to winning. How many Tech boards did they have in Ross's first year

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">That's not really the point. The point is that good coaches sometimes have rough transitions. It happens. Not everyone is 11-0 in their first year. Football is a game of chemistry. Most first-year coaches are still trying to establish that chemistry. Some are successful. Some are not. You can't just discount the problems of a transition and act like things should just be perfectly smooth.

I think we'll know alot more about CG after next year.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

The difference is Ross was a proven winner at the college level. He won three titles at Maryland and helped build a program. Gailey has two years of head coaching experience in college. A more appropriate comparision would be Curry to Gailey.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

Well, if you wanna compare Gailey to Curry, go right ahead. I think Gailey wins that comparison.

I'm not saying he's done a great job this year. I'm just saying that he deserves more time before we all jump on him and run him out of town.

Personally, I think a big problem with this staff is between CG and BOB. I hope that is addressed in the off-season.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

And a national championship at Div 1-AA school doesn't qualify as a "proven" winner? Hmmm...

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

It was a Division II championship and there is a huge difference in I-A football and Division II. Honest question, have you heard any of Gailey's former players give him an endorsement?

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">FWIW, from the press release on his hiring:

Jay Fiedler, Quarterback, Miami Dolphins

"I think Chan is one of the best around, and I've worked with a lot of them in different places. He's a great communicator and is great at simplifying things to let guys go out and play football.''

Emmitt Smith, Running Back, Dallas Cowboys

"Chan Gailey is a very good football coach. He is also an outstanding person.

"From a football perspective, he taught me some things about the running game that I did not know, and he helped my career. He knows how to move the chains and control the tempo of a football game. He knows how to score points, and he knows how to win.

"Away from the field, he is a great person - about as solid a man as you are going to meet. He will have success at Georgia Tech, and I will be pulling for him."

Raghib "Rocket" Ismail, Wide Receiver, Dallas Cowboys

"Chan is the type of coach who can evaluate what a player's individual skills are and then put that player in a position where he can make the best contribution to the team. He is very good at that. I know he did that with me when I came to the Cowboys, and I am grateful for his insight and the way he utilized my individual talents. It sounds simple, but not every coach is able to do that effectively. Chan is a master at getting the most out of each individual on the field, and that's what a player is looking for in his coach."

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

Thanks. That is what I wanted to see.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

To quote Bobby Ross that year (or was it the next?)on the Sunday show with Art Whatsisname "We didn't play very good football, Oit."(damn, now I'm going to have to remember that guy's name)

"Sir, Bobby Ross is a friend of mine, and CG is no Bobby Ross!"

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

One thing I will say about Ross' first year, even though we did not beat a Div-I team, you could see signs of a solid coaching staff. Jerry Mays missed that entire year, and Richard Hills was our tailback. Darrell Gast was the primary QB, and we had lost Gary Lee, etc to graduation. There were a couple of bad losses (Duke & Wake), but the coaching staff really coached "up" the team vs Auburn and Georgia that year, which made it obvious that the staff was quality. We led a Top 5 Auburn team 10-7 with less than 5 minutes only to see them drive 95 yards in the final minutes. We trailed a solid Uga team (with Hampton, etc) 23-16 with 8 minutes left and drove to the 35 yardline before stalling. We had almost no talent that year, and yet we almost beat Auburn & Uga that year.

The jury is certainly still out on Chan. Time will tell if he can coach "up" the team vs FSU & Uga later in the year.

Gnats 67, Was Ross talking to Art Eckman?

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

Yeah, I think that's right, Lionel. I did a google to try and clear the cobwebs and it appears he's been some sort of a motocross announcer recently (if it's the same guy). He used to be a sportscaster for one of the Atlanta TV stations and hosted the GT coach's show. Yeah, I believe that's the guy. Thanks!

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

I'm getting a little tired of all these comparisons to some of our former coaches and their starting records. IMO that stat is way overused. You just don't know the circumstances and personnel involved in each situation. I don't know personally about Dodd, but maybe he had a real young team. Maybe he had lost the "heart and soul" of the team to graduation. What I do know is that when Gailey came in, he had and still has a whole boat load of talent. He was dealt a very good hand when he came to Tech and hasn't performed. I realize we have incurred an unusual amout of injuries, but the fact remains is that we look ugly. I don't claim to know 100% whose fault it is, and I realize that no one else does either. I realize that Dodd and Ross had below average first seasons, but this in no way translates to how Chan will perform in the future.

I will concede that coaching staffs undergo a "transitioning period," and that is exactly why I'm not calling for his head quite yet. I feel that there are quite a few other staff problems besides Gailey and hope to perhaps see those resolved if not now, at the end of the season. Let's all hope for now, though, that this is just a prelude to what Dodd and Ross have done.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

Transitions ? lets see

Last years UMD team was a transition
Two years ago Amato was in a transition
Last year Fridge was in transition
Last year UGA was in transition....

None of these teams had this HUGE problem transitioning did they ?

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

CW JACKETS, I know about Bobby Dodd. I was a Tech man way back then and I can say to you that young Dodd didn't inherit a full cupboard when he took over but it didn't take him long to fill it up.
And lets look at Bobby Ross. Bill Curry left him with virtually nothing when Bobby arrived and Bobby accused Bill of deceit when Homer Rice asked Bill to fill Ross in as it pertained to the talent on hand. Ross said on many occasions that he would not have taken the tech job if Curry had been honest with him. But Bill Lewis and Chan Gailey inherited a program with excellent talent,
they just don't know what thehell to do with it.
CHAN IS TAKING THIS PROGRAM TO THE SEWER.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

I completely agree with you when you say that Chan has a ton of talent and is doing nothing with it.

...but I think that it's not all Chan's fault, but almost everyone else's on his staff. Our players simply look poorly coach and I credit most of that to the supporting staff.

Re: What was our record in Ross\'s first year?...

Goldrush,...good point...I'm just trying to give Chan the benefit of the doubt. Chan has had a good amount of success in the past and seems to fit the bill as a head coach on paper. He seems to be a good PR man and a decent administrator (given his history) and that's the bulk of a head coach's job these days. I think with the right supporting staff (ie get rid of everyone but Tenuta IMO) he can succeed at Tech too.
