What we know now:

Personally I would like an OC and a DC that will make changes at halftime.

I might be happier if that would have happened.

I would add to that list a special teams coach that practices KO coverage.

We know a lot more than we did before:

We now know with 100% certainty that we don't need a new OC, that Nix is completely capable of putting together a high powered offensive game plan, and that the problems with the offense so far this year are 100% on the head of Reggie Ball.

We now know with 90% certainty that Taylor Bennett will be our starting QB next year, and that we'll be able to redshirt one or both of our incoming QB recruits. That's good, IMO.

Furthermore, we know that Bennett will be a good quarterback, and may end up being a great quarterback.

We can be reasonably sure that we'll keep Tenuta this year, after his D gave up an 18 point lead, twice, on national TV.

We know that if CJ stays, we will be obvious favorites to win the ACC next year. Even if he doesn't, we look to be as good a team next year as this year. We also know TB showed CJ that his stock isn't going to go down by staying, which is a glimmer of hope.

We know we still need a kickoff guy.

What we don't know is pretty obvious - why Reggie started in the first place - but there's enough anecdotal evidence for why. TB's previous sub 50 completion percentage, Reggie elected captain, Reggie senior, Reggie physically superior. Whatever. Yes, we all would have benched him earlier, (me too) but we're just fans, not in practice, and don't know everything.

My assessment of the game:

TB was everything Reggie wasn't, and the future for him looks bright. Our offensive gameplan was awesome, nigh perfect. We never abandoned the run. We never abandoned CJ. We never forgot about Grant. We threw the ball to essentially every position, at every spot on the field, and we ran the ball superbly. Backs out of the backfield, backs in the slot, TEs over the middle, backs on delayed releases, WRs on screens, WRs down the field, TEs down the field, you name it, we completed a pass there. Anyone who complains about Nix after the Gator Bowl needs to be shot in the face.

Our D Line got manhandled all game, by a vastly superior O Line. Our linebackers were not prepared to play assignment defense to neutralize the option, because Tenuta relied on defensive ends to assume part of the role, and they got beat head-to-head by superior players. As such, we were only in a position to make the tackle about half the time, and when you give up more than 10 yards on 50% of the other team's running plays, you're pretty well screwed. We blitzed ourselves out of the game, just like we did vs Clemson.

That said, we still easily could have won, on the backs of good offensive playcalling and gutsy HC decisions, if it weren't for a few screwy plays. Them recovering the squib was screwy, and that sleeper-play touchdown thing was screwy. Take those two away and it's our game. Hell, take the clipping call on 3rd down away and it's probably our game.

At the time, I thought the fieldgoal attempt was really really dumb, but seeing how our D played afterwards, I can understand wanting to try and make the 3 points with the wind at our back. It was only short a few feet, and the D looked like total crap all game, so I can see why Chan wouldn't have faith in it. So I give Gailey the nod over me, and yall, on that. I thought the onsides kick to start the second half (even with a lead) was gutsy, well timed, and worked, and everyone must give Gailey the nod on that.
Fire Tenuta--hire you.You are a genius, where did you acquire all of of this football knowledge/ hindsight??

What we know now:

1. Nix can put a game plan together given four weeks to get ready for one of the worst pass defenses in the nation.

2. We also know that we still do not adjust to the half adjustments of the other team. If you read the comments from West Virginia the focused on the running game to make TB pass.

3. We know Taylor Bennett can execute a game plan against said defense.

4. We know Taylor Bennett has a strong arm and is more mobile than thought.

5. We know that our defense can be had when a team is motivated and has time to prepare for it.

What we don't know:

1. Can Nix put together a complete package that averages 30+ points a game ala Ralph every game week in week out?

2. Can Taylor Bennett perform the same when the defenses are better designed, coached and have dramatically more speed like: Miami, Clemson, Va Tech and UGA? and possbily without Calvin Johnson?

I personally think that BOB was a better offensive coordinator with talent that Nix ever will be. That being said I would love for Rad to force Gailey to hire a proven big money guy like JT is for the defense for the offense.

I think we will need to wait and see the spring. I beleive Booker and Garner will suprise us now there is no reason to knock the backup QB's for a while.
The BOB quote has no factual backup. BOB ,if he was any good ,would be a coordinator at a school other tha Duke for Chrissake!

I would add to that list a special teams coach that practices KO coverage.

All KO coverage looks like crap when your kicker can't get it past the 10 yard line regularly, and has no height on his kicks. Seriously. We had problems with "punt coverage" last year, got a JUCO transfer punter, and now punting is great. We need to farm JUCO teams for someone who's smart and can kick the ball out of the endzone.

Fire Tenuta--hire you.You are a genius

Huh? I never said to fire Tenuta. I also never said to fire Nix, like all the Stingtalk "geniuses" regularly do. And Nix definitely gets the nod over Tenuta for game planning on the Gator bowl.

Personally I would like an OC and a DC that will make changes at halftime.

Did you see the stat that Tech leads the nation in 4th quarter comebacks? It was a Gator Bowl graphic, though, so I suppose it could be wrong. (hehe)

I didn't lose my faith in the CG / Nix offense in one game and I am not going to regain it after one game either. I don't think that it is obvious that all of our offensive problems have been solved because we had one good passing in the last 4 years.

Lets see what Nix can do without Calvin. Until then the case is not closed...

He'll have an All ACC running back, a good reciever in James Johnson, and talented OL next season. Those are some good tools right there.

OK NCJacket, here's my opinion of beej67's outlook.
1. We do need a new OC. Sure Nix did well in the Gator but what transpired the previous games? sure you can say he was laboring with Reggie as the QB but why didn't he insist that they should give T.B. an opportunity.
2. Taylor had a terrific bowl game and should be the #1 QB going into spring but we have some excellent QB's coming in so Gailey owes it to them to take a long look at make sure we put the best talent on the field. From his history though were not sure he is the best judge of talent.
3. beej67 also said he was pretty sure Tech would keep John T. , is he joking, why wouldn't Tech want to keep him?
4. He stated that Tech would be the "obvious" favorite to win the ACC in '07. That is a big stretch- I believe we had the best chance this year to win it all and couldn't close the deal.
5. Lastly, we have to find someone who can kick the ball into the end zone. Please spend a schloarship on a bonafide kick off man !

Good response yellowbritchies. I agree with most of that. On #3 he means he doesn't think Johnny T will leave, not that Tech would want to get rid of him. I don't think we need to use a scholarship on a kick off man necessarily, but we should be able to find one someway.
