Where's Geoff Collins going?

A link on the other board mentions that Geoff Collins is moving on. Unfortunately, it's a "paying members-only" discussion, because my thread got deleted almost immediately after I created it. Anybody know what's up with Coach Collins?

I now live here in Birmingham. Have for 2 months. I always liked Alabama until I lived here.

Well - before I even found out about Geoff, I decided I would even pull for UGA against Bama. These idiots are unbearable. That was after about the first month.

I like them even less after they took our boy.

But good luck to him. He will be successful anywhere he goes. Hopefully we can get him back one day.

Geoff definitely wanted to stay at GT. However, his desire to be a coach on the field was a higher priority. I am surprised he is leaving for a comparable position, but the bucks must be significant. I know Chan was going to do whatever was possible to keep him. However, he wouldn't fire someone to keep Geoff. If any on the field coaching position opens up, I hope we will be able to bring him back.
His contribution to our recruiting effort, his love of GT will always be appreciated. We will miss him. Good luck to him but not to Bama.

Geoff was originally hired as an on-field coach. Chan sat on the announcement of his hiring for nearly a month because they were a month away from signing day and he didn't want to disrupt anything. Then he gave the special teams job to Charles Kelly instead and promised Geoff a slot down the road. It never materialized. Now, he's hauled in the best recruiting class we've ever had and we can't afford to compete with Bama's $80MM+ surplus.

Geoff will be making more money at Alabama in this off-field role than any of our on-field coaches excluding Chan and Jon.

btw...Geoff was never hired as on-field then had the deal changed on him. Geoff is very happy with how things have been handled and hopes to be back at GT one day. However, we will never be able to compete with Bama's money. Heck...fans are already complaining about the Tech Fund.

Hiveredtech, don't you know Gailey screwed Collins over. The evil genius of Chan Gailey lured the poor innocent Collins in with the understanding that he would have an onfield position, once he had him signed to a contract, he switched the deal while the ink was still wet. Chan the evil mastermind behind this plot had intended maliciously to screw Collins over from the outset.

That's why Collins was so motivated to bring in the best GT recruiting class ever. Makes total sense.

Clapper... what a dumb thing to say.

So, what are we going to do to replace him? Is he replaceable? Are we not going to be able do anything b/c of the lack of funds? Aren't we trying to trim down the AA through attrition?
Do you think that we've learned enough from Geoff to translate to future successses? Was he the primary reason that we did so well or was it a combo of him +Giff Smith, etc.?
I know its a lot of questions but I'm just a little concerned after finally getting a taste of a great recruiting class only to "one step forward, two steps back" like usual.

That's not what I said BOR. There was nothing evil about it. It was just a matter of circumstances. Collins was in fact hired a month before it was announced and his position wasn't settled at the time, but it definitely centered around recruiting. His goal has always been to get back on the field. Collins was in fact hoping to get a shot at the Special Teams job. He also thought he would be considered for the recruiting coordinator position, which was unfilled even after his announcement. That went to Giff Smith. Neither was the wrong decision. They just limited Collins options for advancement. Frankly, if he were the kind of person to get pissed, I'd think he would have been more hacked at Smith's promotion than Kelly's hiring. But he wasn't. As you said he loves Tech.

Somebody asked why he would make a lateral move. All I demonstrated is that it wasn't just the money. The guy has aspirations and we have no openings at the moment for him. Saban comes along and offers him more money with an evolving staff. We can't compete with either.

Besides, why would the guy lay down? You don't get promoted or recruited if you do a crappy job.

But Saban isn't putting him on the field either clapper. It's about the money most likely. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But do you think he would have stayed if we had given him an on field position and Saban had offered the big $$? I don't think so.

The main thing is you made it sound like he was lied to by Chan. I don't think that's the case.

Is this definitely confirmed? My Dad (a Bama fan) says he can't find anything on the Bama end that confirms his hire. He's not on his computer too much, but he hasn't been able to find anything yet.

I'm sure there's something out there I missed. Could you guys link me on something?

Thanks!

No, not on the field at present, but here he wasn't even allowed to leave campus to recruit by NCAA rules. That is likely to expand. And I don't disagree with the argument about the $$. The raise is substantial. IMO, had Chan offered only an expanded position yesterday and a little cash, he still would have gone. But, speaking extremely hypothetically, if the Giff Smith/Georgia Southern deal panned out and he had been promoted, I think he'd probably still be here. He didn't. We couldn't. Like I said earlier, it's circumstances. I never blamed Chan. Maybe some read it that way, but it wasn't my intent.

Who knows, maybe his thumbs just got tired from texting all the recruits twice because Chan couldn't figure out how to work his own Blackberry.:D

GTRoy - expect the formal announcement either late Sun. or early Mon.

Clapper tell me your not an AA insider, if you know all of this information.

In the articles I read, Giff Smith was the recruiting mastermind of this class, but of course with your inside knowledge tell the low down.

Where did I say Giff wasn't the mastermind? All Geoff did was finally get our AA to use the technology our students (and our recruits!) have been perfecting for years...among other things. The two of them were the best recruiting team we've ever had.

rw1, perhaps you should try that sometime, using technology, I mean. Then you could be an 'insider', too. Just think, not having to ask stupid questions like, 'does anyone have an update on D Richards?', or give away your hard earn cash when you could have just opened those e-mails that said, 'hey, we're going to make you give us more money, so don't make that end-of-year donation!'

Geoff Collins was hired to completely revamp the recruiting strategy and communication with high school coaches, players, and parents. He completely changed the medium for communication (early and excessive mail and texting...from multiple coaches)...junior day promotion, participation, and organization...unofficial practice visit organization and promotion....camps...etc. He was an "unofficial" recruiter...so he had to be careful that he did not cross the line since the NCAA limits it to on-field coaches. He was a tireless worker that served up recruit after recruit for the position coaches and Chan to "close".
The other coaches know it because they had their rear's handed to them this year...and players talk about it. Make no mistake...Giff Smith played a huge role as well...but the process put in place to follow were things Geoff had done before during his previous brief tenure.
He absolutely loves GT....but the pay was close to a 150% increase and he is now paid more by Alabama than any GT football coach except Chan and Jon.
Alabama is screwing up college football...so much for a level playing field.

So whats stupid about "does anyone have an update on D Richards"? There were no posts on the board discussing the issue of whether he would stay at Tech or not when he at first did not get in the MBA program. Or did you not see that thread?
