Who do we push for the Heisman next year

Have we ever had a player in serious Heisman contention other than Castleberry and Hamilton?

Uncle Bee mentioned Billy Lothridge as noted above, and GT promoted Robert Lavette for the Heisman during his senior season, IIRC.

I think Eddie Ivory finished 8th in voting in '78 and Calvin Johnson finished 10th in '06.

However, the biggest single component will be how well the team does - unless we have only one or maybe two losses while putting up big numbers no Jacket will contend for the trophy. That's why Joe didn't win it in '99.
 
As great as I think Dwyer is, I do not think he has a chance unless we make the BCS championship game. I just dont think the media loves the option enough to push it seriously. If we lose a game in which it looks like we are stopped, I believe the press already has the article written about how our offense has been figured out and will no longer work..

When was the last time someone won the Heisman from a team with more than two losses?

Last year. Tebow and Florida were 9-4 on the season and had three losses already when Tim won it.

Tim Tebow on a 9-4 Florida Gators squad.

The corollary is usually that the player has to break some kind of long standing or major record.
 
Actually, now that I think about it, depending on how well the run 'n shoot packages work, Nesbitt may be able to crank out some stats of his own...who knows?

I think it really depends on the number of throws per game, and even then, Josh will need a huge number of total touchdowns, both passing and throwing. The knock of Josh would be the same as the knock was on Tebow last year - that he's a system QB and his numbers are a result of the system, rather then talent. Also, Dwyer would hinder Nesbitt's chances, as he will get a boatload of touchdowns and yards. I think that Nesbitt would need a year similar to Tebow's last year to win it, but we've got way more talent at running back then Florida did last year, and we don't need Nesbitt to be the entire offense.

Personally, I think from a leadership standpoint, someone like Tebow or Nesbitt has to do alot more for the offense to move then Sam Bradford would, but the Heisman is a popularity contest and I just don't think we're that popular.
 
I think JD needs to catch a few out of the backfield and make some cool moves on the defense to get noticed. Otherwise, he'll just be the big guy who runs through the wide open middle in the option.

Ron Dayne beat out Joe H, lots of people thought it was some sort of sympathy vote for whatever reason, maybe getting passed over in previous votes? Seems like he had an almost mediocre year when he won.
