Who to pull for - week 2?

i always root for all of ND's direct opponents b/c it helps SOS as others have said. your team will possibly be in consideration for a BCS bowl and every little bit helps.

Again, SOS means squat now - except for bragging rights.

Under most circumstances I would agree with you --I dare say that I probably loathe ND as much or moreso than I do UGA.

The only reason I am pulling for ND this weekend is because all week I've listened to the college football talking heads opinionate about what a long year it will be for the Irish --their offense is terrible, it's a rebuilding year, etc. I know that ND is down --but there has been too much focus on what ND may or may not be --and IMO not enough on GT's preparation and execution against the Irish.

If ND were to defeat Penn State then there might be a little more national appreciation for what GT did in South Bend. Besides, it's not at all hard for me to pull against Penn State.

Let me add that I have pulled for Notre Dame maybe three times in my life:

2005 against USC
1991 Orange Bowl vs Colorado
1981 Sugar Bowl vs UGA (I was actually pulling for a tie in this game --but a ND win would have been ok)

...and the Irish let me down.

It does help with how the media (i.e. voters) perceive your team though. This can be the difference between a shot at the NC or playing in another BCS bowl (see UF, 2006/07). Either would be nice, but it wouldn't hurt us if ND runs the table the rest of the year and gives us some "street cred" if you will. That being said, I still won't root for them.

Just my opinion, but I don't believe it has that much bearing on the polls. The name of the school typically has more say in your position. I.E. - if UGA and Tech were both winless (prior to the final game of course) with Tech having a better SOS, UGA would still get the nod. Most coaches in the poll will look at how a team did the current week. They're not going to go back 4 weeks to see what type of opponents we beat. Also, if an opponent we beat suddenly goes on a losing streak, it won't affect our standings in the polls. It sucks that they did this. It only helps teams like USC who have two maybe 3 tough opponents all year.

This is incorrect.

The BCS removed the direct SOS component from their formula (and good riddance, too - it was retarded), so perhaps to the casual observer it looks like SOS has been removed.

However, the computer ratings in the BCS are largely determined by schedule strength, particularly since the BCS disallowed victory margin from the computer formulas.

VT @ LSU
Miami @ Oklahoma
NCSU @ BC
Nebraska @ Wake
Notre Dame @ PSU
Duke @ UVA
USC-East @ UGA ;)
USF @ Auburn

Uh ACC mostly. :)

Miami - it would be good to have the U back.
BC
Wake
NEVER ND!
NEVER Puke!
NEVER UGA!
Good lord, 3 of the 4 teams I HATE the most. I need a second to recover. If you had added Indiana in that list, I would have exploded. :)
Auburn

VT @ LSU - I like VT but I also like LSU. ACC gets the nod.
Miami @ Oklahoma - Miami. No contest.
NCSU @ BC - BC. Not even close.
Nebraska @ Wake - I would really love to see Wake pull this one off and I think it can happen.
Notre Dame @ PSU - First time ever to pull for ND. Must be that I really like their fans.
Duke @ UVA - Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn.
USC-East @ UGA - What? Pull for UGA? This time I will. Go mutts.
USF @ Auburn - Auburn. Again, it's the fans I like.

Notre Dame @ PSU
Duke @ UVA

USF @ Auburn

for VT @ LSU - approximate number of teeth in the stadium, 65. Not counting animal teeth, 27.

for Miami @ Oklahoma - if the saying "cheaters never win" is true, then this game will collapse into a black hole.

against Nb @ Wake - Maybe Wake can introduce a new offensive concept to Neb., its called the option.

for ND @ PSU - just want to eliminate all Big 11 teams from BCS consideration by October. Then ESPN will be watchable.

for Duke @ UVA - because its not New Years, and I don't want to hear that tune.

for USC @ UGA - because I don't want hear about how the cocks beat themselves.

for USF @ Auburn - because the shame of the loss would shut up SEC fans for 0.00001 nanoseconds.

Nice work, WracerX. I'm not sure I'm want to hear about how the cocks beat themselves, either.

Well, (SOS) does factor into the perception of the those voting in the polls.

Sorta, but sorta not. It helps during the season with voter perception, but it hurts preseason because people rank teams higher who have weak schedules because they expect them to lose less. Totally retarded. Like, why Rutgers is ranked so high, for instance.

The BCS removed the direct SOS component from their formula (and good riddance, too - it was retarded), so perhaps to the casual observer it looks like SOS has been removed.

Right about the computer polls, but I soooo disagree about removing the SOS element from the BCS formula. The BCS formula was invented WITH THE EXPRESS PURPOSE of taking SOS into account when determining the NC game. That was the WHOLE POINT. And yet, every time it put a 1 vs a 3 and the 2 got left out all the journalists whined and bitched about it being "BROKEN AGAIN!" ... hell, if it's broken every time it doesn't put AP 1 vs AP 2, then why have a formula at all? Why not just put AP 1 vs AP 2?

Because journalists don't take SOS into account, that's why.

The BCS formula has sucked ever since SOS was taken out as a direct element.

VT @ LSU - I hate to pull for a SEC school but I hate VThug more then any program in the country even UGA. I hate there fat never went to the school red neck fans with there gay Turkey feet stickers all over there car and who claim they have always been a Tech fan, but none of them ever attended a game before Vick played there. Also they recruit and field a team of thug low life's who could not get a job at Burger King if it was not for football.

Miami @ Oklahoma - Miami
NCSU @ BC - NCS
Nebraska @ Wake - Wake
Notre Dame @ PSU - Notre Dame
Duke @ UVA - UVA
USC-East @ UGA - Cocks
USF @ Auburn - USF I think they have a great coach.

Why not indeed. It has always been the right answer and screwy BCS formulae have always been wrong.

I think the right answer has always been a playoff.

Though I'm sure everyone here knows that.
