Who wants to start a tradition?

I suggest the War of the Broken Oar, which alludes to a notorious 1920s drunken bet between a GT fraternity and a Clemson fraternity, over who could row a boat across Lake Assmuch or whatever lake Clemson is on, about who could row a boat across with a treebranch the fastest. Insert allusion about how Ag students row faster, and engineering students row smarter, end with natural rival result, package for ABC announcers. Add a dash of moonshine / prohibition avoidance and we've got a winner.
I finally got around to throwing up a wikipedia page.

One man can't make a legend, but a few of you contributing here and there and I bet we can have some fun with the media and you'll get yourself a little chuckle every time some uninformed reporter mentions it.

I have started a tradition. It involves giving boxes of Raisins on Halloween to little UGA fans. Look it up.

The Wikipedia page got deleted. I enjoyed reading the history of the tradition of the broken oar, even if was complete junk.

RamblinPeck may still have it. I didn't think to grab it, I thought we had until tomorrow before they took it down.

Clearly what we need to do is create a website or two about this, that we can then reference the wiki article to, and put it back up with references so the mods don't nuke it.

My guess would be that there are people who read this board that mod wikipedia and they will be deleting it regardless of how official you make it look.

I doubt that.

If there is anyone here who mods wikipedia, I would expect they might be sympathetic to our cause.

What we need to establish sources that Wiki will accept.

1) We need a website for the rivalry. Lots of groups simply cite to their website for support/own members. There is at least one group that affiliates itself with Tech and does exactly this.

2) Technique letters to the editors. GTKyle--here is your moment to prove your worth--as a current student, write a letter to the editor of the Technique and AUC about the long forgotten history of the "War of the Broken Oar."

Even better if we can get someone over at Clemson to engage in this--I know a high level administrator at Clemson and if we can get the website going I'll talk to that person.

Kyle--We'll supply the facts in this discussion (building on Beej67's brilliant story)--you write them down and create a letter stating that it's a shame that given this wonderful history that we don't do more to remember this great tradition.

2a) delete this thread so that wikipedia mods searching the internet won't be able to find this discussion.

3) Between these two sources, we'll have a start. Then--if we can get any Tech person with a blog to mention it--we can cite to that.

4) As soon as a major news media outlet jumps on it--we can cite to that.

If we can remain viable on Wikipedia after steps one and two, then I think we can succeed.

I nominate TechSBP to be in charge of coordinating the misinformation effort, and GTKyle to be our student representative in this endeavor.

This will be a lasting memory of your college years if you can get it to work, Kyle.

i suggest we get Adamm to put an aritcle up on his website, maybe even with comments about how the coaches would always bring up the Broken Oar before we played Clemson

If we were in the Big 10, this would be a slam dunk. There's no way all of their stupid trophies have the history that the Broken Oar has.

I'll have to find my picture of Kerry Watkins kissing The Oar after "the Catch". I was at the game. It must have taken 10 minutes to get from the nosebleed visitor section Clemson gives out.

Not very well known, but that year Fridge and O'Leary almost lost the Oar while fishing on Lake Ocoee. It might have been O'Leary and Beamer. I forget, they all have houses on that lake.
