Who wants to start a tradition?

Not to mention the incredible subterfuge behind Daddy Bowdon getting Tommy the job over at Clempsun in the first place. (he didn't want him on staff at FSU) But NO!!! we're not supposed to talk about that.

It's all a part of the Broken Oar!

Burton, not Ocoee.

Sorry.

I think the only reason we ever went up to play at Clemson was to retrieve the Oar. They won it one year and then refused to return it unless we beat them up there. Dodd hated the Oar, but the alumni pressured him to get it back.

Not that it matters, but its oconeee. At least according to the savannah article here

If we do this thing, we need this thread as well as the one on the hive deleted before it all goes into effect.

And early draft of it is below:
The Georgia Tech - Clemson rivalry, now known as The War of the Broken Oar, is a football rivalry dating back to 1898 between the the [[Georgia Tech]] [[Yellow Jackets]] and [[Clemson]] [[Tigers]]. The for the first 80 years of the rivalry the game was primarily played in Atlanta, as it was the largest city in the SouthEast, but now alternates between Memorial Stadium and Bobby Dodd Stadium.

==History==
War of the Broken Oar, began several years after the teams early meetings. Sometime in the spring of 1921 members of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity Georgia Tech chapter, several of whom were on the football team, took on a trip to Clemson to investigate founding a chapter there. During this visit an argument began about the merits of engineering vs agriculture education. A wager was suggested to see who could row a boat across Lake Clemson, the Clemson student betting that he would row stronger and the Georgia Tech student betting he could row smarter.

The Clemson student won and the Georgia Tech students vowed to get revenge at the next years football game in Atlanta. A game that they won 21 to 7, at which time the Clemson students in attendance presented a broken oar to the Yellow Jackets team captian. The Oar itself has been lost but the rivalry continued, and has been marked with fierce, but good-natured competition.

Make it happen all, makes the games just a little more fun.

Umm, I'm pretty darn sure I've motored past O'Leary's house on Burton, and pretty darn sure Beamer's house is also on Burton, but much bigger.

beej67,
could have been lied to, possibly

Beej, it's Lake Oconee. We motored by them last summer with a couple old teammates of mine. Larry New was there and Freidgen as well.

Thats lake Oconee at Reynolds Planation you're talking about.
The lake that Clemson's stadium sits 500 yards from is Hartwell.
Trust me....I did a lot of drunk swimming there at a bar called Pitcher's.

Its Lake Oconee, between Eatonton (home of Brent Cunningham) and Greensboro (home of Josh Nesbitt).

Where is Lake Burton?

Lake Burton is in the north GA mountains. I beleive Nick Saban has a summer house there.
