This is a very interesting situation. A school with undeniable great tradition and resources, handicapped by being on NCAA restriction for several more years, must come up with a new coach. Most years this would be the premier coaching opportunity in the country with almost anyone in the land willing to listen and most eager to accept the opportunity. In reading the list of early candidates I am quite shocked at the supposed short list:
Mike Riley - a demonstrated mediocre Coach in college and pro ball but one of Bear's boys. This would be a rerun of Ray Perkins and Mike duBose. Not the answer.
Urban Myer - an outstanding young coach with a bright future ahead. Probably would not fit the experience mold most Bama fans are looking for. To me this would be a great hire but I doubt it will happen.
Walt Harris - Pittsburgh coach who has brought that program back to respectability but does not have the charisma I think you would want at Alabama.
George O'Leary - would be a kick butt pick who would whip the team in to shape and set a foundation for a decade of greatness. Too much of a yankee to ever be accepted by the good old boys in Bama.
Here are a few I think would be great:
Jimmy Johnson - his ego would will the Tide to the top.
Houston Nutt - great young coach. A motivator of young men and a good football mind.
Butch Davis - another great coach who is probably frustrated by the BS of the NFL.
It will be interesting to see who emerges. If they take Riley, they will be making a mistake.
Go Jackets!
