Based on what we know, which is next to nothing, I'd tend to stay away as well when we're handing out schollies. However,

I sense a possibility here that he may have been under the influence of the older perpetrator and didn't have the maturity at the time to stand up and say what they were doing was wrong. That type of influence does happen among kids all the time. He could have easily, subsequently, developed into a decent human being.

Very sad and unfortunate.
