Why did Miami's loss push Tech out of Top 25?

Who cares? If we beat UNC, clobber Miss State, win at FSU, VT then we can be back in the Top 15.

The only reason we're not in the AP Top 25 is that more voters didn't vote like Ryan Finley of the Arizona Daily Star.

http://pollspeak.com/pollstalker/pollstalker.php?s=9&p=18&t1=33&t2=0&v=502&w=4&r=V

Mr. Finley had the courage to rank us 15th and Miami 20th. He also feels that Florida State does not deserve to be ranked at all, despite his feeling that the BYU Cougars are the 13th best team in the nation.

:laugher: It does indeed take a lot of courage to admit to the world that you're a moron. I wonder how this guy determines his rankings.

Polls are stupid. Anyone who thought Tech should be ranked a week ago and thinks they will be ranked later in the season should believe they are a top 25 team today. The polls are not supposed to be a critique of the teams last performance. Maybe injuries and adjustments over the season change a teams status, but all the people who say we're not a top 25 team because we looked bad on Thursday should stand by their opinions for a while. I guarantee these same people will be all pumped up in a few weeks saying we're not ranked high enough.

Actually they kind of are, when you consider that they're used to determine who plays in BCS bowl games. It's a weird hybrid thing, and it's one of the reasons the system sucks so much. It's one part opinion on how good you think the team is and one part standings based on wins and losses.

Georgia Tech has definitely struggled in some areas, but this team was ranked #14 and was dropped out of the Top 25 totally because they lost to Miami, who is ranked 9th?

I thought Tech and Miami would transpose poll positions with Tech at #20 or #21 and Miami at #13 or #14, but out of the poll completely? What's up with that?

Many in the media are saying the "U" is back, and maybe that is the case, but why is Georgia Tech being penalized so heavily as if they lost to an unranked, non-conference team by double-digits?

Pollsters wanted to give more weight or credibility in their win over Ga. tech to justify a higher ranking for Miami, but uses the opportunity to push Tech out completely.
Because we got hammered

It's also why if you're in the NC running it's MUCH better to lose early than late.

USC got beat by a team that is not as good as Miami by any stretch of the imagination. USC stays in because the voters know the team just had a bad day, but they completely change their view of Tech based on that one game. I'd probably do the same if I was voting, but I understand the whole process is a stupid act of futility. Watch the polls if you want, but don't expect them to be based on any type of objective insight.

The polls are way too fickle, and are never a valid barometer of how good a team really is. This had been said ad nauseum on this board, but polls shouldn't be made until midway through the season.

Well this guy is a complete idiot. It's frustrating to realize that this ballot was filled out by a person who has both the responsibility and the power to control the polls.

A 'Ballot Czar' (no, not BuzzCzar) needs to be impowered that can simply look over a ballot such as this one and say, "That's it, turn in your badge on the way out the door, you're done."

One game? Did you not see the Clemson game? We were terrible in BOTH games we played in, BOTH of which most pollsters got to see since we were the only game on. We had our one bad day with Clemson where we got a pass and didn't drop any(remember U[sic]GA dropped on their bad day but win, because they already had a loss), then we had another one with Miami.

Then why didn't we drop after the Clemson game?

Because, like he said, it was one bad day. As we all know, any team can come out on any day and look like crap, and the important thing is to get the win. But when you come out twice in a row looking bad, and you lose the second time, plus the last time you were on national tv prior to these two games you were once again getting dominated by LSU...that's a recipe to fall like a rock. Hell, just look at how freaked out our board got about it. We looked like crap against Clemson and no one was terribly concerned, but it was the twice in a row that really got everyone going.

Have you watched USC-w this year? They haven't looked fantastic in their wins either.

LSU is irrelevant for ranking because we were ranked 14 after that loss. The ranking already considered that loss. JSU was a tune-up so that could only hurt but not help. Clemson and Miami are our basis of comparison.

The bottom line is that if we suck so bad then Miami shouldn't have skyrocketed for beating us. And if Miami is so great then we shouldn't have dropped so far for losing to them on their home field.

Several teams are ranked with worse losses than ours. You can rationalize they also have better wins, but we really don't know how good or bad the wins or losses are relatively at this point. They got the benefit of the doubt; we didn't.

because preseason polls are bullshit

all polls are bull**** too until about the 4th or 5th week.

You what the best poll is? Kirk Herbstreit's ... and I mean the theory behind it. He re-evaluates it and basis the next week's poll by the way they've played to date. This week he had Miami at 5....quite frankly IMO it may be a little low based of what I've seen so far.

And furthermore, if they get it to 4 - 0, then I truly think that they could be deserving of a #1 ranking. Think about it...on the road @ FSU, then GT, then VT at home, and then on the road to Norman Oklahoma

That's 18, 13, 11 and 10 (rankings). Oklahoma may be without Bradford, but they're still OU. And VT is no cupcake

Who cares? Why are we soooo concerned about Rankings right now?

I just don't understand. Can someone please enlighten me. I just don't get the logic

I believe that Miami plays VT away and OK at home.
