Why is Brent Key getting zero love on the boards?

Didn't Key engage in negative recruiting against Tech at one of his stops?
I think it'd be a conflict of interest to funnel recruits to Tech while at another program. If his recruiting pitches were documented they might come back and bite him in the ass if he ever comes here but he's just doing his job.

Brent Key would make a fine addition to the staff. Just not as HC or OC. He can recruit. He should be able to coach OL at a very high level since he was one himself.

I think he would be an excellent hire. Could certainly transition the linemen as an assistant. I could see a Whisenhunt w/Key as assistant thing happening.

I honestly don't see how he's qualified to be a head coach at any P5 school

The fact that he’s already been offered HC slot(s) in FBS and Saban sought him out for the staff clears a pretty big hurdle. I’m sure I’m biased by my late 90’s nostalgia but he is my top choice. Some pros:

- Recruiting
- Career developed under O’Leary and Saban
- Knows how to navigate GT (I’m not a fan of hiring an alum for the sake of hiring an alum, but Brent knows exactly what he’s up against from the hill)
- Will bring energy that we won’t get from some of the other names being thrown out
- I should reemphasize recruiting

Coaching at Tech isn’t a fit for everyone, but I’m hard pressed to find a reason he shouldn’t get a hard look for the job.

Serious question. Why would anyone (especially someone from Alabama) leave a slot with Saban to be an assistant for Whisenhunt at GT? I would think that would require an absolutely enormous pay raise.

Why am I getting the impression that our coaching search is a lot further along then everybody thinks it is.

Agreed 100%. I also believe:

-Won't leave for "greener" pastures.
-Can develop players very well, especially OL (we will become OL U)
-Is a great motivator
-phenomenal at game planning and finding weaknesses in the other team (if you thought PJ was a game planner/adjustment maker, CBK is better in my opinion)

I have a hard time finding someone that will check off more boxes. He's only missing the never been a head coach before.

.

??? Bold assumption. CPJ has game planned overall very well at multiple college stops and his in game adjustments gave GT an advantage (often).

Key’s O was pretty poor.

I disagree wholeheartedly. Perhaps PJ was a better game planner before GT.

I am struggling with a number of names I am seeing on the boards regarding coach search. Being honest, our list is going to be short due to budget and academics. Personally, I really believe any candidate without any experience at Tech should not be considered unless you have coached at one of the academies.

So with that said, I see a lot of love to Ken W, Tony Elliott, Jeff Monken, and Brian Bohannon but nothing much about Brent Key.

Ken W is going to cost too much money, has not coached at the college level since 96. And I would not call his time with the Titans successful. Probably a really good OC but HC? To me, Ken is Chan Gailey all over again.

Elliott probably fits into the budget, brings a creative offensive mindset, but has zero experience at the school. And let's be honest the real coach at Clemson is Venables. Until he arrived and made that defense into what it is, Clemson found a way to lose 2 to 3 per year including several to our out going coach who has been hammered the last few years because of the Clemson D. So would Elliott be a Fedora or Kingsbury?

Monken and Bohannon would fit into the budget, know the school, and represent a less painful transition to a modern offense. But do we really believe they can achieve the success with this offense in a Power 5 conference.

All said, to me Key seems intriguing with risks. You know he would fit the budget, he played and succeeded here, and finally Saban made a place for him on his staff at Alabama. Just because he is at Bama doesn't mean he will succeed here.

But why not take a chance on a guy who has seen football success at the highest levels up close and personal. I get zero coaching experience but he was the OC and recruiting coordinator at UCF until 2016 so every kid that has won 25 straight he brought to that program.

Plus could he get Goose to come and be the OC? Key and Goose played together.

I want to hear what's the issue with looking at Key hard for this job?

Tony Elliott, Jeff Monken, and Brian Bohannon

Would rather have Geoff Collins if that is the level of guy we are looking at.

Have learned more about most of the candidates here than elsewhere which is not a surprise. ST is my favorite GT forum
which is not only entertaining but often informative, go figure.

At any rate, don’t have a favorite candidate just yet but starting to lean towards Collins, do hope he gets an interview at least.
