Why is Tyler Evans returning punts?

The race of the players has no place in this discussion. Tell me his 40 time or describe his moves or hands, but leave out the racist remarks, please.

Oh be quiet. It is almost a fact that black people are faster and more athletic in general. How many white people have run the 100 meter dash in under 10 seconds? ZERO!

How many white RBs are there in the country? I can only think of Devon Hester...

Did any of you ever consider that Tyler Evans might be our best playmaker as a punt returner?

No, and I still don't. Speed/elusiveness is the name of the game, of course catching the punt is the most important, but I really think that a WR or RB at this level (hell, even in HS) should be able to field a freaking punt.

Consistent yardage is important and Evans seems get at least something on most of his returns, but I guess I'm just being unrealistic in wishing we could put a real threat back there.

Not Devin Hester (Bears KO specialist). You're thinking of Jacob (?) Hester for LSU.

Beej is right though. I would rather have someone that never fumbles and has a decent PR average than someone that might be able to break one, but can fumble. IMO, they're more likely to fumble than return a TD.

I am white, so I can talk about crackers all I want. If blacks can call other blacks "the N-word" than I can rail on my race for being slower than our darker counterparts.

apparently none of these boys can field punts or they would get a shot! Just a thought.

Having been to almost every practice. They never tried G Smith at it and IMO with his style they should have.

They did do J Evans, reese and grant. They opted to not use grant and evans b/c they did kickoff. Not sure why they moved on from reese...perhaps age.

But all those guys looked just as good as T Evans in their jobs, and J Evans broke a few in practice. I don't get the thought behind T Evans....to me its just reliability over performability. Crap, they put in A Smith for some reason I don't know and he fumbled.

so I don't want to hear its just about T Evans. He obviously wasn't prepared to field punts yet they stuck another walkon in for some reason. That position has been jockeyed by two folks, both are walkons, 1 fumbled anyway. So again...what are we gaining?

A better question is: Why do you care about the race of the players enough to make an issue of it?

I agree macon.

What if White people had an equivalent remark about blacks...that blacks do with whites in regards to "white men can't jump" Crap, they titled a movie. Sharpten and jackson would be all over that. But it is perfectly fine to say that about white people. Whatever...

Save the crappy race discussion. We have two walkons, fielding punts, and one fumbled anyway. So why not put in someone with more of a threat...whether black or white.

The question is: Do you want a punt returner of a certain race or do you want a punt returner with certain skills/abilities? By bringing the race of the players into it, you make it sound like that's what you care about.

Yeah, well it doesn't get much more reliable than a Honda Accord or a Kia, but I'll never drive one, especially when speed is a premium.

exactly...why I just bought me an 08 vette.

Papale can stick it, I want a deon sanders.

That was my point - save the crappy race discussion. I want a punt returner with good hands, good moves, and quick. I don't care about his race and it is asinine to bring it into the discussion.

33, "performability"?

Also, I don't know about G Smith's ability to elude tacklers on PRs but he's dropped entirely too many passes for me to be comfortable with him returning punts. Not saying Evans is our best guy because I don't know, but I would be worred about Smtih.

Last thought is we don't seem to try very hard to have a return anyway. I don't care who you are if you field a punt and you're looking right at 5 defenders coming in on you with no blockers as Tyler was several times against MD it doesn't matter who's back there.

I think at the end you referring to the UVA game when Smith went in, it wasn't because he wasn't prepared. Tyler had a serious injury he just now got over.

Here is my problem. EVERYONE is capable of fumbling the ball, even the sure handed guys. TC had his consecutive streak of rushes without a fumble recently lost. I imagine you would call him pretty sure handed though.

And while we all agree that it isnt very often that punts are returned for TD's, that is not the only thing that the speed/elusiveness combo will buy you. You may not get a TD every time, or at all, but what about gaining an extra 10-15 yards? What about the times where they almost break one and get you an additional 30+ yards? A consistent 5 is OK, but there is much more upside potential with someone else. As much of a "field position" kind of guy that Gailey is, and as terrible as our offense has been, I would think we could use the possible extra yards gained on a good return...

WHAT!!!!! LOL...What has he dropped? The dropsies were from BEBE. Geis is on record saying Smith has the best hands on the team. I think you need to go back and rewatch the games. Bebe dropped a wide open out route on 3 and 18 vs UVA, and the first pass thrown his way at Clemson. He finally shedded the funk vs MD.

Smith has made great catch after great catch this year; in fact I can't think of any drops he has had?

I'm making that post my sig.

CJ Spiller is atleast a threat, comments like that makes Tech fans seem......knowledgeable of the game?? Did u really just say that?

Your right I am not knowledgeable of the game? CJ is a threat, but hasn't broke anything, Tyler is a threat but hasn't broke anything. CJ is a bigger threat but he hasn't showed it on punt returns, sometimes its about instincts and finding the crease. We also don't have a CJ Spiller on our team, the most elusive guys have hard time catching punts on our team for some reason. If anyone got to catch Tyler play in high school he wasn't a slouch, he had some of the best numbers in GA, and his forty time is 4.4. You might see someone else back there next year but don't say he isn't doing a good job because he is doing what he is supposed to. Maybe look at the formation on the punt return, were not setting up walls for him to have a big return, its all up field and in the middle, for some reason we are always doing a safe return, if we created a wall for him I have no doubt he could take it back.

A consistent 5 would suck, Tyler averages 11 in your 10-15 category, he also has broke a few for over 20, the longest was 25 I think. If we had a guy who could field the punts and make something happen instead of just dancing around I would be all for it, the fact is everyone of our shifty guys who could get up field struggle fielding punts except Roddy Jones.
