Will Sims have a break out year?

Sims improved from year 1 to year 2 in all aspects despite being slowed by injuries. If he makes similar improvements in year 3 he’ll be a really good qb.

Did he really? He didn’t face Clemson’s, Notre Dame’s, or Georgia’s defenses. Nobody knows how many more turnovers, both fumbles and interceptions he would have given up had he faced the top 3 defenses on the schedule.

I believe Sims success will boil down to his ability to make decisive reads in the run and RPO sets. His footwork and mechanics appear to be improving but he missed a lot of reads and throws in the spring game…for whatever that’s worth. I’m pulling for the kid and hope an off-season with weinke/long pays off.

He would have accumulated more stats had he not been injured, yes. Had he played against Kennesaw he may have added 5-6 tds as well. That’s speculation, as would be how he could have performed against the other top teams, BC, or dominated another half vs UNC.

That said he was the first GT qb in two decades to complete 60% of his passes, improved his TD/Int ratio from 13/13 to 12/7, reduced his fumble rate, and was a more efficient runner.

So yes, I think he did improve from year 1 to year 2 despite battling injuries.

That's good info pertaining to Sims. Much of how he might improve will be up to the O line! Last season our O line looked like the Falcons!

Depends on the O Line play and if he has improved his accuracy
Accuracy, like tackling is hard to teach. Seems he is another in a long line of really good athletes playing QB. Joe Ham, Goose, Jones, and Dewberry, were accurate when they got off da bus. I do think the RPO will help him though. Hope the TE from Syracuse can help.

I think he will be better coached this year. I expect to see him improve. Does this mean he will have a breakout year....maybe...IDK.

My unprofessional views are:
Pros
  • He has a lot of potential.
  • He is a weapon running the ball.
Cons
  • He seems to fumble too easily.
  • I hold my breath on almost all pass plays.
  • He has not been coached very well.
  • Sometimes running the ball, he goes down too soon if he's facing an on coming DB.
  • He has missed several games.
Question: Is he a leader?
Big question mark - Why does Tech struggle so much fielding a decent offensive line. Even Sewak had a decent offensive line 7 years ago.

Sewak's lines could never pass block worth a damn, but that was kind of understandable since it was very little of the offense. Why Key, who was supposed to be world's better coming from Bama can't get his guys to pass OR run block consistently I do not know.

This year will determine if Key was held back by our previous offensive coordinator.

Coaching held him back last year. Patenaude was overall bad, but he would call a good game now and then that took advantage of Sims’ running ability. I think it’s reasonable to expect the next guy to do more of that.

But let’s be honest, Sims will have to overcome weak OL and WR’s to have a true “breakout” year.

Collins hubris got him and will ultimately lead to his dismissal. He wanted to make so many splashes when he was hired he made poor choices early. Primarily being so hellbent on the “transition” that he offered any tall overweight player he could find so he could make paper arguments about “weight and length”. None of those arguments have bared any fruit. None. Our OLine is a mess because our players can’t move which is why simple swim moves or twists get our QB killed. I’ve been so shocked that Key and Choice never gave him a code red or just left. And it’s been the same with the TE position. Just a total failure by Collins signing players who can’t move. Hopefully the TE from Syracuse will show us the TE position actually exists.

I don't argue with your points but to add that the Tight End position seemed to have little depth for a year or two. I think things will improve here over time.

Sims will not have a break out year. He will miss at least four (4) games. Not mental or physically tough. Nothing but a Collins hype job!

We’ve all seen his flashes, and to be honest non of us really know anything about his mentality. In other words you have no idea what you’re talking about.
