Woeful Mismangement of a GREAT Receiver

Another thing that destroyed us on offense for the 2nd and 3rd quarters was first-down penalties. Damn near every drive started with 1st and 20 or 1st and 15.

Damn, that's it!!! Throw the ball to Calvin!!! Why didn't we think of it sooner?

Listen, I guarantee you the coaches know they need to get him the ball. The problem is Reggie either makes the simple reads or nothing at all. He makes up his mind before the snap what he's going to do, unless of course he feels any pressure at all...then he runs.

...straight for the sideline

The one thing I guess we will never know is why we kept Reggie in the game so long. Don't tell me the coaches have no faith in our backups.

This won't be discussed on the Chan Gailey show rest assured.

Unless someone hear has an inside track......

BOR I am on you fire Chan bus for now on.

I am not on a fire Chan bus. If you are, then quite simply you are a ööööing moron when it comes to football.

I am not sold on Chan. Last year I made that clear. However, I also said that we'd be more stupid to fire him last year with the impending turnover in the GTAA. This year, I think Chan is doing a great job thus far, even with the loss to Clemson who as a team I think should be competing for the National championship if it wasn't for that loss to BC. That was a great great team.

Hate to say it, but it is quite possible that the coaches have no faith in our backups. Personally, I figure we didn't have anything to lose by putting TB in, but the world may never know.

Another great example would be last year's Utah game. Utah killed us with three step drops and quick slant routes, effectively taking our blitz out of the game. But, we didn't adjust the D at all, and we kept getting beat.

We've played multiple teams with three step drops both last year and this year. ND was supposed to be the master of the universe at the three step drop and we held them to 14 points. In the Burger Bowl field conditions in San Francisco, 4.4s became 4.8s while Utah's OL still weighed upwards of 315 pounds.

I'm just not convinced of the two things a lot people have said about the Clemson game:

1. That Tenuta was outschemed.

2. That Reggie should have been taken out.

On number 1, our defense held them to 7 points in the first half and essentially held them to 10 points in three quarters. It's credit to Tenuta that Clemson didn't blow the game open when their interior linemen kept dominating our DTs and MLB.

On number 2, the was again not out of hand until some time into the fourth quarter. The game at one point was 17-7 after Reggie successfully led a touchdown drive (it wasn't all one throw). Reggie has thrown some good passes this year when given time and we'll never know what would have happened if the defense didn't give up a quick touchdown on the next drive.

The game was still in doubt going into the fourth quarter. But what wasn't in doubt was whether we were going to score enough to win...we weren't. Reggie didn't kill us by putting the defense in a bad position or giving up the killer play. But it amounted to the same thing because we were helpless on offense.

Reggie is an above average QB when he's running imo. That opens up the passing game and gets him pumped. Whether it was the injuries or not, he couldn't run effectively against Clemson. That turns him into a pocket passer which he cannot do. I think we should have given Bennett a series or two to see how he did and also to let Reggie see the game from another vantage point. We could always have gone back to him if we needed to.

Guys, am I the ONLY one who saw JAMES Johnson catch all those passes against Clemson? I have seen NO other mention of it. I THOUGHT I saw him make a PHENOMINAL catch in the end zone.

But, I MAY be wrong. I'll have to go back and check the tape to be sure. SURELY someone else would have mentioned it if that REALLY happened.

Of course, MAYBE there's NOBODY but Calvin who can make catches like that.

Leather, you've posted this in about 5 places now. Good. Thanks. James Johnson deserves all the credit in the world for stepping up and becoming the second receiver that RB can go to.

You're right...everyone said preseason that somebody HAS to step up and be a viable alternative for CJ or opponents will just triple cover him and shut him down.

Now that JJ has stepped up no one (excepting your fine self) has mentioned it. Our lack of offense was certainly none of JJ's fault!

Great point, floridajacket. If I recall correctly, we were 0-3 in games in the rain last season. Those games? VPI, NC State, and Utah. Inclement weather takes our speed completely out of the equation.

Thanks for calling me on that. Also, I like the Burger Bowl reference.
