Wrinkles or No Wrinkles?

They were zone option, which is different from the load option we've run in previous years, iiuc.

I think it was a keep read because vpi had a cb taking the trail aback usually. Iiuc, the bback was going after the lb assigned to take qb. There was at least one late pitch to an ABack iirc.
Does this mean we were zone blocking?

3/o: reads key (usually playside DE, iirc typically a 4/5 tech read)
Then runs outside and will read the next key (typically play side olb) for the pitch

Zone read option: the first read of the 3/o by itself

Midline: similar to zone read, but the read key is the guy lined up across from the guard (2 tech). Iirc, the b back takes the a gap and the qb takes the bgap.

Load option: a double option, but the bback doesn't go forward, he runs outside as a lead blocker ( or the aback blocks and the bback is your option)

The sweep we run is like the load option, but both the motioning aback and bback will be ahead of the qb as blockers. At times, it looked like we were running this with the qb outrunning his blockers.

(Might've mixed some terminology in there, and I'm not a player, so take it with a grain of salt)

Our Zone Option is a keep-pitch double option.

We do zone block. The videos say the blocking is like the triple, but we don't zone block the triple typically.

I'm not an expert so all of this is iiuc.

What gtrower said. CPJ likes to say things just to confuse DC's.
Does this even make sense? I mean, do DCs go “Paul Johnson said in his presser that he employed no wrinkles, so I was clearly mistaken when I saw those changes in the blocking scheme when watching the tape”?

I don’t think CPJ goes out of his way to intentionally use the media to confuse the opposition, but similarly he’s not going to spell out everything we did either, just to satisfy their every question.

No DC in all of college football is going to be swayed by what a HC tells the media.

Agreed. I guess CPJs tone is a little less soft & polished & a little more eat s&@t, ala Bill Bellichik

I think the majority of coaches have a good understanding of "coachspeak".

The sweep or zone option play is a designed QB keeper and he reads the blocking to determine the lane.... very similar to the BBack reading the guard block to determine his run lane.

What is good? This makes defenses shift hard to the outside. The blocks are very easy compared to blocking the MLB, safeties, CB in normal alignments and the 3TO.

The shift to stop the zone option results in over pursuit and opens up the middle.

Then you run the toss or an option when they try and shore up the middle and the edge.

I don’t like going to the triple on the first few downs on teams we normally play as all it does is allow the defense to use what they practice... throw in the triple once you get them thinking about other things.

This except I think the pitch is a legitimate option. It's like you said though, when the QB sees the lane he tucks and runs. That's not to say that CPJ can't remove the option by yelling "Keep!"

@AE 87 I think you may be right about the pitch... and I think there is also a part of the design that a pitch is not really possible in the tight set. The read guy would have to be a safety or a CB. Also, Navy ran this same setup and I have never seen a pitch.

I have seen a pitch setup in the USF where the DE was the pitch person. It looked like they were hitting the DE in the first 2 drives of VT. Even in the USF game they hit the DE and then in a later drive they turned it into an option and left the DE unblocked...

Perhaps it is an option unless the defense lines up a certain way. Like the mid line loses the option if the DT lines up inside the guard. The DT is now blocked by the OG and the BBack becomes a lead blocker. At least that is what it looks like to me, but I may be wrong.

Yeah. Sean was calling it zone option in the booth. What is interesting is this must be a pretty new play for us because Foster mislabeld it, and someone I follow on youtube has as well.

That is labeled a sweep, but it really looks like there is a read key. The AB looks to be expecting a pitch as well.

Another example. It looks like we are optioning the defender outside of the WR.

Sorry one more. It looks like Louisville actually caught on here:

Instead of slow playing it, the defender outside of the WR goes up field to try to muddy the read. Oliver fakes him out with the fake pitch

In the "againt the eagle" video, the guy says we didn't run it but army and navy did. In the other video he discussed varients we run.
