XP Penalty

I agree that kicking the extra point would've been better but here's a hypothetical sequence where taking a knee would've been better:
1. We attempt an extra point but it's blocked AND we get a 15-yard penalty.
2. We squib kick from the 20 and it goes out of bounds. Miami ball at the GT 45.
3. Miami kicks a 62-yard field goal and ties it.
Or Miami returns the blocked XP for 2. The rest plays out as you described except Miami is kicking for the win.

I probably would have kicked it because, well, I don't think I've ever seen a knee on an XP. I do get Key's explanation and think it was a reasonable decision.

Thinking about the squib or onside or whatever you want to call it on our kickoff. If it stays in bounds that forces them to pick it up and return it or the game ends. As opposed to a normal kickoff where you can fair catch and get a next play. So that was actually a good call unless you kick it out of bounds which is what of course happened. Right?

Correct. Was the right call but wasn't executed right. I'd almost say it can be a wrong call cause not sure avg college kicker is good at it.

Suppose the snap flies over the holders head. Since the ball was never kicked, does that become a fumble recovery that can be run back for a TD or is that still just 2 points?

If you are up 4 you take a knee on the XP, if you are up 3 you do not. It could have be a Christobol moment, but thankfully, it was not.

Ah I guess I can see the reasoning. If they return a kickoff to FG range the game is over on time. A FG was impossible.
I don't think it was technically impossible. Only two seconds on the clock, but if only down by one and they got off one big completed pass, putting them in field goal range and ending in, perhaps, a targeting penalty, I think they would get one more untimed down, which would allow them to attempt a winning field goal. :dunno:

A squib kick THAT STAYS IN BOUNDS!
I think they were expecting Miami to try to catch and advance rather than risk Tech recovering a long onside. And Tech kicked toward sideline to keep Miami from having entire field on a run back. Plus, when you squib, you are at the mercy of the random bounce. It could pop straight up, or it can stay low and gain speed which is what happened to us.

Running back an xp should be 2 points. There wouldn't have been time for a throw and a field goal after the kickoff.
Unless there was a defensive penalty on the throw, like a facemask or targeting, etc. Wouldn't they get one more untimed down?

It was cause of like delay of game or taking a knee or something on an XP. While them running a blocked one back wouldn't of won the game, I would guess it was to make sure there wasn't some crazy öööö go down that would give them any momentum on the kickoff.

That worked well,didn't it.

We're Georgia tech and We can have and all time win and loss and STILL bitch about a XP

There were only 2 seconds left, so only time for 1 play following the kickoff. A return would kill the clock and you have to go with laterals. A fair catch, touchback, or out of bounds kick gives you the ball on your 35. So really, Miami's only option was a TD attempt. Technically some weird penalties could have gotten them in range for a FG, but by skipping the PAT attempt, we made that path lead to OT and not a loss. Ultimately, regulation could have either ended in a tie (Miami FG) or with a Miami TD. Attempting our PAT would have left the possibility for Miami to win on a FG.

We said basically the same thing, just in a different way. Bottom line, taking a knee on XP insured that UM could only win with a TD. We won and "Hard Rock Shock" is now engraved in the history books! :)

I mean if we are going with multiple improbabilities why not go for 2 to get ahead by 5 so that WE can block the XP and return it for the win.

We know they don’t do kneels.
