Actual #14

Yeah... he did say that. On his pay site. I'm pretty sure if he wanted to share his thoughts nearly word for word here, he would've... but it is just his business and all, so no big deal or anything.

He actually reminds me of Embry Peeples....same size as well.

Red I usually agree with your assessments, but I see nothing in common with Peeples. Kinlaw reminds me more of Rashaun Grant or Roddy Jones as a runner (shifty, make the first guy miss, lacks break away skills). Embry was the opposite, he housed it if he had any daylight but struggled in traffic.

I particularly like the way that he seems to fall forward and tends to deliver the blow by lowering his shoulder into the would be tackler.

Grant and Jones were very different imho.

I put Grant and Peeples in that same true slotback category that require space and run outside the tackles...they break the ankles of defenders and Kinlaw is that type also. He may lack the top end speed of Peeples, but 95% of RB's do (Peeples was 4.38). BJ Bostic is in this category also. All of these guys run low to the ground. Kinlaw has run sub 4.5 forties though.

Roddy Jones was a true RB...built like a truck at 5-9, 199. Roddy could run inside as well as outside (that is why Clemson wanted him)...tremendous vision and balance...always getting that extra 2-3 yards as he rarely went down on first contact. Roddy could be a slotback or a single set back. People rarely got to see how well he could run between the tackles...CPJ actually started running some plays to show that the 2nd half of his career....inside hand-offs. Roddy could sink his hips well to cut while also moving north (wasting little time) as well as any RB I have seen.

Orwin Smith ran taller than you would really prefer in a RB...more of a slasher...needs that crease. However, he was strong and did not go down on first touch. He could change gears pretty well which helped. Blocking...not so much. He was just not the most flexible hipped guy you are going to see...does not sink naturally if you know what I mean. PJ often said one of the best things Orwin had going for him was Roddy blocking for him most of his career...Roddy is the best blocking RB we have had the past 5 years.

Hey....I am not a college football coach...so these are just my opinions fwiw...not going to say "I am right"

I agree with you just based on this tape. This guy has great power for his size and makes really good first cuts. This is a great pickup at A-back for us I think.

Also, Embry, from what he did at Tech, rarely sought contact if the sideline was close. This guy fights for extra yards. Kinlaw may lack breakaway speed, but he makes up for it with that extra effort. Guys like Rashaun and Roddy certainly look similar from that aspect as well.

Orwin comparison makes sense to me. 2 reasons for that. 1. He's a 10 ypa type guy rather than 2,2,26. His 10 ypc actually shows up as a bunch of 10+ yard plays and fewer super long runs. 2. He is a patient runner who is more smooth than quick and has great vision which gets him that extra 3 or 4 yards in every run. Built like Roddy, but plays like Orwin.

I don't see Embry at all, and I always thought Embry was the fastest guy with pads that we had 08-10 so I paid close attention. Embry relied on speed around the corner his whole Tech career, and while he was good in traffic, I wouldn't describe him as patient because he didn't "wait" on plays to develop. That's what I think Kinlaw and Orwin do more of

Major + 1 ..... my very first thought too, was that his running style reminded me of Orwin, more of a "glider" type of runner that absorbs contact well and really never appears to be running that fast .... going back a while, while he's not the same body type at all, to me he's very reminiscent of Eric Dickerson who had a great NFL career while never looking like he had all that much speed .... regardless, this is a very nice signing ....

Embry was a glider which made him a better in a straight line. Both do have the burst though. From what little I've seen of Dennis Andrews, I would say that is who Kinlaw most resembles, to me anyway. Really like the Kinlaw commit!

while on the subject...Dennis Andrews is going to be a player. He will start in 2015 and 2016...with a pretty good chance of starting in 2014 along with Bostic.

When asked if he was finished with recruiting, Kinlaw said, “Right now, I may visit other schools if the opportunity is there. I would have to talk Coach Johnnson about that. But right now, I don’t think things are closed off 100 percent. I can’t put all my eggs in one basket. I have to keep my eyes open.”

I like the kid. Good pickup.

That doesn't sound too confident, however.
