Freshmen Wideouts Will Play

The point remains though that relying on freshmen is not a very good sign.

Do we really know what we have in the WR corp? It is hard to judge after last year when our pass protection was none existent and JT5 was running for his life after the snap. Would CJohnson or DThomas have looked like future pro players based on last year's passing performance? I would like to see a year where pass plays have time to develop before multiple defenders are in the back field before judging the receiver talent.

I said it last year and continue to do so. Going through the option gyrations on third and 7 or more is idiotic and gave JT little chance of making a play. At least let him leave the line earlier if they are going to look like the end of a Faith No More video.

actually this is a testament to the fact the our WR unit is not so great....IMO. So I agree with the poor recruiting of this position in general to backfill losses. The WR unit is very pedestrian. Bottom 1/3 of ACC. So if the new kids are players; then they should bump right to the top.
I guess you played maybe, but man you are a half glass empty poster... Across all the free sites...

Since were tossing out excuses for each, Gailey didn't play against Miami or VT for 2 or 3 of those years.

I think on average, the level of the competition in the ACC is a good bit higher right now than it was 10 years ago.

Gailey also played Auburn once and Notre Dame twice.

Like I've said before, Gailey vs Johnson is a "which girl is the ugliest" debate.

The bottom line is that 35-37 vs FBS over the last 6 years is unacceptable in my view. It is stunning to me that so many people who call themselves GT fans view that record to not only be acceptable, but very good. They are 'C' students, I guess.

The ACC is playing at a higher level, which is why we have to get better, and it doesn't seem to be happening. Johnson likes to say he is 5-4 against Clemson, but he is 1-3 over the last 4 years.

Recruiting, or the lack of it, is the reason we aren't getting better--and the academic excuse is lame.

Gailey never beat UGA so he is clearly uglier. But that doesn't mean Johnson is a supermodel.

2008 defined a lot of things. We had the talent to be good under Gailey, but Gailey didn't understand college offenses and would not hire a quality OC (where is Pat Nix? last I heard he was a DB coach at Charleston Southern). Johnson came in and had one of his best seasons in 2008 with talent that was not recruited for his offense, but there was talent. And, as you say, he beat UGa.

Johnson is a much better college OC than Gailey. However, lots of schools had success with the option in the '70's, but it is hard to recruit to system that isn't used by the NFL. Those schools did not stop playing option because it didn't work, but because of recruiting. Schools playing wide open offenses were more attractive to recruits (note how Duke's recruiting has improved). If Texas and Oklahoma can't recruit for the run oriented option, why can GT? Johnson had no experience at Power 5 recruiting when he was hired, especially in the competitive Southeast. He still doesn't seem to think it is important.

Radakovich forcing Gailey to hire a quality OC would have been the correct move. There was precedence for it---Homer Rice required Lewis to hire O'Leary. But Radakovich is a finance guy, not a football guy like Homer.

How did Lewis do once he was forced to hire a quality OC?

The same posters who were complaining about CPJ and his offense in August of 2014 have resurfaced with the same stale arguments. Then, Tech went 11-3 and won the Orange Bowl, so that makes me think that 2016 will be a good year.

Remarkable how they disappeared that year.

exactly, can't do a lot of route running in 2 or 3 seconds

and bebe, choice; nesbitt, etc. Lets face it; we recruited top talent better before this system. Its just true

but this system is way more prolific. So for me its really about points on the board.

Last sentence nailed it. If the offense improves blocking at all, we'll score enough to win games--it will come down to getting some stops.

While I can agree that recruiting is a part of that, to pretend academics aren't a serious issue for GT, more serious than any other school in the southeast where we recruit, is ridiculous.
They are fixed. Duke, Vanderbilt, and other schools have almost as astringent entrance requirements. What would be the purpose of bringing someone in who has no chance?

When was the team good other than 2014 in the last six years?

Right, so they got to be miserable for five years and the one time we had a hell of a season they didn't even get to enjoy it. What's the point of watching it you can't enjoy a season like 2014?

Changing the subject? You are making excuses that lead to an up and down program. We even had a hell of a lot better season in 1990. I've also seen 3-8 before, but it wasn't 8 years into building a program.

Couple of thoughts. Most college programs play offenses that are not run in the NFL. Just check with any NFL scout/analyst/commentator. I get what you're trying to say, that other offenses seem to showcase the things the pros look for but just listen to NFL radio some and you'll hear that it's not that clear cut. For example, the other day there was a piece on why most college linemen really don't know how to run block. I do agree that most recruits like wide open offenses.

Also forcing Johnson to hire an offense coordinator would be stupid. Fire him if you don't want his offense, but there is absolutely no reason to have him as head coach if you don't want his offense.
