Scheme Vs Players - Call in Show

On the call in show PJ said for the first time in my recollection that game prepping and scouting is all about the players and not the coaches or schemes. I feel like this is completely opposite of everything I have heard him say in the past in which he usually says "we prepare for schemes and what other teams do, not the players".


Was anyone else as shocked by this as I was?

It was a total contradiction to everything he has ever said about game-planning. Seems like a major change of course.

I'll stick with more hard hitting topics like jersey colors and kickoff times from here on out.

You gotta expect a lot of potshots from the peanut gallery if you post on ST. I think it's a good question.
 
I remember the exchange you're talking about, but I don't think that's what he was implying at all. The question was about whether or not having Mark Richt gave them an advantage (based on him having seen us so much at Georgia), and CPJ was just countering that the players were the advantage, not the coach. He may have said something like "we prepare for the players", but you have to understand that in the context of what he was asked. Richt had good players at Georgia and he has them at Miami, etc.

I am not shocked that CPJ is full of shit.
 
He didn't exactly say that. He said there are only a few different ways to defend the triple options and so nothing is very surprising in terms of preparing for schemes. On top of this, you can exactly watch tape of the team's defensive schemes against other offenses and have a blueprint.

He said what makes the biggest impact are the players on the field. No matter what offense is being run against you, you have to make blocks, shed blockers, get leverage and push, make tackles and plays, and play your assignments. And Richt has had success against CPJ because his team's are always loaded with talent, not because he has broken some magic code.
 
He was just trying to downplay the Richt vs. Johnson narrative. Just like he downplays the "special preparations for individual player X" narrative. If you would've asked him "What are you doing to prepare for Barrios (or whoever)?", he would've said "we prepare for the scheme".

Johnson doesn't game plan for individual players and he doesn't game plan for particular coaches. He game plans for schemes and teams.

I was telling someone this today when they asked me about Johnson vs. Richt. Richt is not some kind of TO whisperer. He’s had better players EVERY year (except maybe 09).

In fact, it’s been rare that we don’t move the ball well against his teams, talent gap and all.
 
Outside of Urban Myer, CPJ at Tech has probably averaged more total yards of offense against Richt than any other coach who played uga annually.

CPJ's defenses haven't been very good, though.
 
It was a half truth answer. Of course he plans for scheme. You’ll recall previous interviews about how many base plays we have in the offensive game plan each week. That’s mostly defensive scheme, but partly personnel driven. If they have a great player on the DL, we might have some plays in our game plan to account for his athletic abilities. (I.e. don’t option the end who is rangey)
