You young guys hang on

Georgia is really good this year, but they lose a ton next year. If they can manage to choke in the semis it will be tough for them to make it next year or the next couple.

Our season is over now - take the rational outcome. Stidham played Georgia panicked tonight and Georgia had an answer for Auburn with the middle blitz. Georgia is good, their defense is great, they have a stable of NFL running backs, and their freshman QB is looking like the next Aaron Murray. But... they haven’t seen a guy like Brent Venables and Clemson’s defense is better this year than last year’s national championship defense. Baker Mayfield is a stud, even if he is a douchebag. One of these two will beat Georgia.

Will you be my life coach for the next month please

More reason to build a team that can beat them. I guess it doesn't matter though, for many it's more fun to joke about how dumb their players are while getting run over by them.

I was alive then too. I believe the popularity of Herschel and the championship is what led to the stadium expansion and the true turning of this state to red. Our title a decade later was met with "meh"

The Sanford and Son expansion was already approved prior to Walker ever signing with the dwags, so they had enough support even at their mediocre 70s level to expand to 82k. However, you are right that the MNC that year is definitely what created a whole mammoth group of Gen X fans.
I was 10 at the time, growing up in a town, Dalton, with a fair amount of Tech grads, due to the carpet industry. After that year, I saw many kids chuck their Tech gear and put on Red and Black.....we have never recovered.

That and they’ve managed to turn uga fandom into simply being from the state. That partly has to do with some of our asshole fans looking down their nose at anyone who did not go to Tech. In all seriousness, at least half of the uga fans I know went to other colleges like Southern, Mercer or Armstrong.

Lots of that is directly tied to usually beating GT. Most year no matter how bad their season has gone they get to win the last one and hold their heads up. Winning can cure many things.

I think that’s the way it is in most states. Good on Auburn and Clemson for having as many sidewalk fans as they do.

The only snobbery I’ve witnessed by Tech grads has been directed at uga Walmart bandwagoneers. Most of the Tech grads I know look at our own sidewalk fans in bewilderment wondering why one would choose this.

I’m sure it was a different environment in the 1950s when Tech was Atlanta’s college team.

I once asked a person whom I knew was a sidewalk UGA fan, why he chose to pull for them instead of Tech, or some other team. The guy looked at me sorta puzzled and said, " I live in the State of Georgia, not Georgia Tech. "

Also I had a guy tell me that he had been brought up to hate Tech because we say "To Hell with Georgia". He said he had ancestors who had fought and died for Georgia in the Civil War and his whole family took THWG as an unpardonable swipe at the whole state, not just UGA.

Dang you've found a group of relatively highly educated ugag fans, half the ugag fans I know flunked out of those colleges or didn't go to college.

If you look at the States contiguous to Georgia, Tennessee is the only school like it and that’s because the only other team playing on the big stage is Vandy and it’s private. So UT is the only state school playing on a big stage.

Florida - FSU has more than its share of fans as does Miami.
SC - Clemson
Alabama- Auburn pulls a ton of loyalists
NC - who gives a öööö, but NC State does not seem to be at any disadvantage vs UNC.

Is it time for the Gold Hat Initiative yet?

I do my best every day to try to make a new fan.

When we hired Johnson way back an opportunity was missed to bring more Southern fans into the mix. We got a few who like Johnson, but we need those fans/grads who will skip a Southern game to come see us instead. This is a substantial part of uga’s fan base that attends games.

öööö both of them.

I'd say of my group of high school friends who graduated in 1984, about 15 of them chose UGAg. Perhaps 2 went to GT. Several sprinkled out to Southern Tech or Kennesaw State and some of the transplants headed out to places like Illinois or wherever their family was from. Back then, there was no hope scholarships so you essentially, if you had decent enough grades and a good GPA, pretty much got accepted where you applied. I was lucky to attend a high school where kids were generally expected to do well and we all pretty much did.

I was accepted to UGAg, but never considered attending. I needed to work, I was pretty much on my own, by choice, when I graduated High School. I really couldn't have afforded to go to Athens if I wanted to and I didn't want to to begin with. My parents are great parents, but that house was tiny and I wanted to become independent. Damn, money was tight. Like $0.40 in the checking account tight at times - I remember balancing my checkbook once in about 1986 and that is what I had. At least I didn't overdraft. I just had to drive like there was an egg under my accelerator pedal and scrounge up food until I got paid. I used to kill the breakers to my apartment every day to everything but the fridge just to save every cent I could. I still fondly remember that struggle. Not so bad when you are 19 or 20. I was getting plenty of tail from my pretty blue eyed, big boobed girlfriend, who eventually became my first wife after 5 years or so of putting up with me (she's a really big girl now - we divorced 20 years ago, 1997).

The turn to UGAg fans really, in my lifetime, started about 1976 or so with the Junkyard Dwag stuff, IIRC. Of course, the true roots are Dodd removing us from the SEC and UGAg and the Mississippi schools vetoing our return. UGAg has been smarter than the smart Tech folks when it comes to building a football program ever since 1963. UGAg seems to have brushed aside the old "drive through Athens slow enough and they'll toss in a diploma" moniker that they used to be saddled with. Nowadays, it is a student loan mill.

öööö both of them.

I am not saying they are right, or that you are wrong in feeling that disdain, but your response, shared by many, if not a majority of Tech fans helps contribute to half empty stadiums and an ever increasing red and black hoarde.

A difficult question for engineering types is whether you would rather be right or happy. For most Tech grads those two ideas are one in the same. That works when building a bridge or creating an electrical design, not so much for interpersonal relationships.

Like it or not, building and sustaining a football fanbase is about interpersonal relationships.....not math. Take winning percentage out of it, UGA is simply better at this than Tech is.

They live in the state of Georgia not the state of Georgia State? :crazy2:

In my manufacturing facility, exactly NONE of the UGAg fans attended UGAg. Not one. Of course, not many even went to college. Our biggest asshole UGAg fan at work was banned from ever using my tickets again after I took a group of them to see the Perriloux Jax State game. He was an embarrassing asshole the entire time. Said afterward he'd never step foot in our stadium again. He has asked since why I haven't taken him to a game again to which I tell him "because you were an asshole in my seats to my fans using my free ticket which we have paid multiple thousands of dollars for for years. You said "I'm never stepping foot in this stadium again" after being an asshole to our fans at our game with your constant telling of how much better UGAg is than GT at everything. You slammed our stadium repetitively for basically not being UGAg's"

He claims that I shouldn't hold that against him and has asked to go to GT games with us at some point. He asks every other year for "free" GT/UGAg tix. I've told him I would burn the damn things first.
