won't get better until the players get better.

8.1 ppg better. I'm counting on the Defense stopping that score in the last 2 minutes of the half. No more bend but break. Also when the offense gets its act together the D will be helped immensely.

Players will get better if they're better coached. Defensive play calling being better would also make a difference. As long as Woody doesn't let Miami throw 18 bubble screens in a row I think we might win a couple games more with the same players.
Go back through all the games and determine what stops you’d expect the new D to make. And then calculate a new PPG.

It may get marginally better. I actually think the talent on the field should be better, too, though. If that's true, yes we should be better.

But I don't think a brand new defensive staff is going to make a big turn-around. Just like it hasn't the other 2 times.

We don't need to make a new PPG necessarily. Aside from Duke and Clemson, go back through each game and find 1 or 2 defensive drives/plays that would have changed the outcome.

And what if some of the defensive drives in games we won (VPI) go differently. Maybe we lose that one.

That's exactly what I'm saying. The play we made against them was exactly the play we didn't make against Miami, Virginia, in some ways Tennessee. If those plays go our way, I think Duke is a significantly different outcome.

The way I see it, we were 4 plays from being 9-2.

So I'll agree 3 plays can account for losses against Miami, UVA, and Tennessee... but what one other play would've compensated for 23 points at Duke, 14 points against Clemson, or 31 points against UGAg?

I disagree. Just because we hired someone new back then doesnt mean we hired the right people. It may not be a big turnaround but we lost two games by a single point. Marginally better defense will make a huge difference imo.

My prediction: 5 ppg better

I think we'll be more disruptive, which will result in more negative plays for the offense and more turnovers. We were pretty close to being a good defense at times last year. My biggest concern is replacing the secondary, but I like what the new guys have done in their limited action.

Better, but only after the defense has been simplified so they can play faster.
