Armed Forces Bowl

Our version of Monken just quit on us after 11 years of IIWII football.

No thanks.

I'm happy for Army but they'd be lucky to win 7 games with our schedule. Monken's done a nice job there and will likely be there for a long time, since no other P5 schools want to run his offense. If they did, they'd have hired him already.

All I can say is the people who have such passion for Jeff Monken should have spoken up and expressed their desires between the time PJ retired and CGC got hired, instead of spending the last 3 weeks throwing their tantrums and pining for another coach after the fact.

Monken had a vocal contingent of supporters from the start, but it became apparent pretty early on that TStan wasn't going to double down on the option. I could have been talked into supporting Monken, but I think we made the right call and am excited for Collins.

Lets enjoy Army football without making it a referendum on the triple option at Tech.

I'd just be happy if we had fans who were fans of our school, not fans of some offensive plays that can be run out of a set of formations.

I’d be happy if we didn’t have a mob of “fans” whose sole enjoyment seems to be running down the program at every opportunity and pretending that the previous coach went 2-10 every season.

Our West Point player was already home and in church today. He said Monken was great at halftime. They were up 42-7 and he said Monken told them “Keep the accelerator to the floor. Do not let up. Go for the biggest bowl win in history. Everyone will get playing time, but when it is your time, show me why you should be playing more.”

He turned it over to the acting Defensive Coordinator, the DB’s Coach, who promised, “Our DB’s will have their guys covered. So, front seven, we will be sending you every play. This is your half. Go out there and get as many sacks and hurries as you can.”

Jake has absolutely loved playing at Army. He says Monken is as tough as nails but a great motivator. He said when he gets married I can expect 30 groomsmen in his wedding, because there are that many players who are like brothers to him. He has one more year and has had an amazing experience there.

Valdosta High head coach Alan Rodemaker is a Zebulon, NC native and his family was home for Christmas and in church today. His son, Tate, is a 6’3” or 6’4” Junior who set the single season Valdosta record for passing yardage this past season. Would not mind seeing him come our way.

I'm happy with Collins even though Monken was my #1 choice. I'll be stunned if he doesn't get a P5 job soon. Even though CPJ's tenure here ended on a disappointing note, there are a öööö ton of teams who would kill to have 2009 and 2014 type seasons, even sprinkled amidst mediocrity. I'll pull for him wherever he goes, for sure.

I don’t think so. Even Kansas has passed on the triple several times. AZ couldn’t overcome the stigma and they were already running Rich Rod’s shotgun triple option.

I think the divided Tech fanbase is going to scare off even more opportunities. It would have been a completely different had we followed 2009 and 2014 with decent seasons. But it didn’t happen. All CPJ was able to show in the end was the triple can deliver higher highs and lower lows than a conventional offense. And that is with an option guru.

You honestly didn’t enjoy either of the last two wins over VT because of the number of QB keepers we ran?

Seriously, if we beat uga running nothing but qb sneeks, I’d be happy.

See, that's not going to happen though. that predictable crap worked against cupcakes like the 2018 VPI and Loserville teams but got bitch-slapped by damn near everyone else on the schedule.

I was at the UVA game. I enjoyed the victory - I think it was CPJ's only OT victory here - but I absolutely did not enjoy watching our offense, which got repeatedly stuffed by the cadavers. Declining attendance #s might be coincidental but may also reflect the growing # of fans who were tired of watching it too.

At the end of the day, it flat-out wasn't beating the mutt-like teams on our schedule, nor had done so in quite some time.

:bigcry:

Obviously Monken has done a great job at Army.

But there are several pragmatic reasons why he could not have been a candidate at this juncture at GT.

And all of us as fans way too often react to one game or season as a reason to advocate one way or the other.

I remember a coach that turned around a program and went 11-1, losing only 1 game to a big ten team. During the season he beat several ACC teams, as well as vt, cuse, pitt and others.

He beat a top 20 team in the bowl game.

But all of that was probably not good enough reason for GT to hire Bill Lewis.

There is much more to it.

When we were losing to them, VT was conveniently included in the Big 4 that we couldn't beat. Now we own then and suddenly they're a cupcake? We went 5-3 in the ACC this year, and one of those losses was to Clemson. I know you hate the option, but it's so irrational to say we got bitch-slapped by anybody but UGA or Clemson this season. Only 2 teams ALL YEAR put up more points than us on UVA, but you call that "repeatedly stuffed"? The problem was that we couldn't get Perkins off the field and UVA was controlling the ball just like us. Thank God for Bronco's poor decisions because it was looking like they were going to outscore us.

Don't try to sugarcoat a turd. The ACC Coastal was craptastic this year. Finishing behind Pitt and missing the rights to getting stomped by Clemson in the Championship game on a rare year when VT and Da U both stunk is a failure.

Please. This was the worst VPI team in a generation, no matter how the Option lovers want to spin it. It got destroyed by lowly ODU fercrissakes.

We scored 1 TD and a couple of FGs vs UVA. The offense got stifled time and time again. We won primarily due to a Safety by the D and the resulting PR TD from that. And an awesome kicker. And yes, Bronco's stupidity.

Duke also stuffed us and so did Pitt. It's only irrational to think that cupcake blowouts equated to an offense that was good against other teams when, in fact, it wasn't.

So you're telling me we did a lot better against weaker opponents than we did against good opponents? No way!

FWIW we punted 3 times against Virginia. That's the lowest number of punts they forced the entire season. VT put up 34 the following week and got "stuffed" and forced to punt 7 times. UVA did not stuff us.

Duke stuffed us. Pitt stuffed us for a half. UGA and Clemson obviously stuffed us. The other 8 games, we played well enough on offense to win. Is that an elite offense? Of course not. But it's a solid one that was handicapped by the lack of a QB. With an actual passing threat we probably go 9-3 this year, at worst.
